Santo Domingo.– New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos said justice was served when an appeals court released him on $57,000 bail after spending three weeks in jail.
He reiterated his innocence in a Sept. 30 car crash that killed two women, Josefina Minaya Martinez, 38, and Angely Fana, 29.
"I was not driving the Hummer when the accident occurred," he told local TV station Canal 37. "People here are jealous and they want to get me in trouble."
He declined further comment about the case and about unrelated charges filed earlier this year after he allegedly threw his girlfriend to the ground. "I don't want to talk about that," he said. "My lawyers have already resolved it."
The 24-year-old reliever said he would not return to his native town of Nagua because he fears for his life.
