Washington.– The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Peace Corps signed an historic alliance with six well known Dominican non-profit organizations to benefit poor communities in the Dominican Republic.
The purpose of the Alliance is to use baseball as a catalyst for
improving the lives of the less fortunate in the Dominican Republic
through sound community development activities.
Baseball is, traditionally, America's game, but it is also the passion
of the Dominican Republic and will be helpful in bringing a host of new
ideas and contributors to help alleviate the many challenges facing
poor Dominicans.
USAID will contribute $1 million to the project.
On November 19, P. Robert Fannin, the U.S. Ambassador in the Dominican Republic, and Joe Garagiola, Jr., MLB Senior Vice President, announced the Alliance during a ceremony held at the Ambassador's Residence in Santo Domingo. Many former and active Dominican baseball players and key MLB representatives participated in this event to include Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz and Robinson Cano.
The
Alliance has two principal goals: improve the quality of life in
Dominican communities and foster long-term relationship between MLB
teams, players, and fans with these communities. The projects under
this Alliance will focus on education, health, youth development,
small scale economic development and job creation for the poor. The
Alliance will help increase the impacts of the considerable charitable
assistance with which Dominican players are already engaged.
The six non-profit institutions that are participating - World Vision, Save the Children, Plan International, Esperanza International, Batey Relief Alliance,
and the Dominican Institute for Integrated Development - have for
decades provided community service in the Dominican Republic.

They should explain to these kids that the Dominican representation is quite large in the major league. Almost 100 players. Not bad, considering there are probably 50,000 or more kids here who are ignoring their chances for what little education that they can get here to chase their almost impossible dream. GC said it perfectly. We need more (and better) schools, not catcher's mitts and bats.
From: United States
GC, my erstwhile interest in the pussycat has waned somewhat. given her apparent interest in one such as yourself, the issues of her standards and taste come into stark relief. and Juanb, these kids should be made to understand that they have better odds at being struck by lightning, or winning the national lottery, than ending up in the major leagues. as we speak, kids from the USA, Japan, Mexico, Cuba, and many countries too numerous to mention, are all chasing the same flights of fantasy.
From: Cuba, it is a secret the censors are looking for me
that condemnation is a little to broad ...a healthy interest in sports is very good but not at the expense of an education
From: United States
i am not issuing a condemnation , GC; i am just stating the odds, which are daunting.
From: Dominican Republic
The kids are attracted to baseball in the hopes of becoming millionaires. A quicker route would be to study political science..........they get rich faster, the get more millions than ballplayers, they get to play many more seasons, an injury doesn't take you out of the game, it's OK to steal and be involved with drugs and gambling, and if you run some girls over and kill them with your government supplied jeepeta you don't get prosecuted as ballplayers do. I don't understand why more kids don't trade their gloves in for a bullhorn and get into politics. BTW; I am teaching my son to play baseball, not because I think he has even a remote chance of getting into the major's but because it's a clean, healthy sport and should help to develope character and teach him about fair play!!!!!!

It is not about providing more mits but instead, involoving MLB in education, health and other charititable projects. This alliance will build schools, libraries, community centers, clinics and attach their recognizable logos to them to promote education, health and community. It is a good thing.

As a teenager I had the privilege of playing in the Dominican Summer league, and I am sorry for what this leagues stance for today. Major league baseball has ruined it for the kids ... what goes on in the island is disguisting. First off to give underaged poor children steroids and millions is a recipe for disaster. Baseball teams only go to these poor countries to find some talent and know they will get if for pennies compared to what an american or Japanese player may get paid. If anyone thinks for one second that there is not corruption and deceipt your are nuts. There are no lawyers there to represent these kids, all these kids want is the money so they will sign anything anywhere. the Only ones benefiting is Major League teams paying off poor people with pennies and gifts.

Dear USAID,
Please don't send the money because it is bad for our youth to have dreams.
Forget the real reason we encourage our children in the states to get involved with sports.
Like discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork.
It won't work here.
Instead lets let them roam the streets at night.
Yours truely,

this is all wonderful...BUT...last April, both myself and another active person in the community revieved no less than 15 bags of baseball equipment, generously donated by a Ottawa Canada couple. We made the official presentation at the NY Yankees Development camp in Boca Chica, along with the Canadian Ambassador, plus member of staff, US embassy officials, Dominican officials and members of the of the Canadain Junior Baseball team.
Guess what????? The bags of equipment, meant for the Barios and rural regions of the countryside.....STILL...sit in police custody....some 8 months later. Seems they want to collect a tax on this unselfish offering and support from those who wish a better life through sorts and social interaction. This has made both myself and my good friend...not to mention the organizer himself in Ottawa...look pretty stupid in the eyes of the media back home who where all prepared to further promote this effort.
Never again....

as i alluded to before, TFISKE is the victim of too many hallucinogens. he appears to be sitting in some shack in canada, freezing his brains and getting stoned. as far as he is concerned, every thing has one side. tourism is a great money earner, and has no downside. spending millions on teaching youth to play baseball, with the intent of becoming professionals, is a great idea, again with no downside. it is simple minded thinking like this, which refuses to be analytical, that has gotten the country into the mess it is. as long as it looks good on the surface, it must be good. and, any attempt to call upon people to exercise circumspection , in his mind, is tantamount to negativity. he is just like the idiots who believe that if you make any negative observations about a project in the DR, you must be a Haitian. if you extract the obligatory bons mots from his postings, he has absolutely nothing worthwhile to offer, but thinks he does.

These poor kids face pressure from everywhere. On one hand, the buscones or scouts tell them "we can get you signed and have all your dreams come true, and if you don't take our offer we'll pass on you." On the other side, there's the parents factor. They press their kids to sign and they will even make side deals with the buscones and scouts. Again, these are families that have nothing to show for and finding what to eat tomorrow is a challenge every day.
The same reasons apply why the use of steroids have been so dominant among domincan amateur and minor league players. The buscones would give them the steroids and the promise that they will be signed. If the players don't want to do it, the buscones would just tell them that the players' family would starve if they don't sign. And most of the times the buscones would deceive the players with whatever lies they can come up such as "these are undeteced substances or these are just vitamins you need."

TFISKE, i used to believe that your musings are occasioned by hallucinogens, but, maybe, you have been hit in the head by one too many golf balls. i am not criticising anything; the issue here is one of seeing the downside to actions. you and i see things from a different vantage point. to me , the DR is a real country, with real people, who have real needs and aspirations. to you, it is a resort wherein you and your fellow travellers can go to catch some rays and hit some balls. my postings all relate to consequences, or externalities. you are the type of guy who believes that tourism must be great, because, heck, you and your friends left a 200 dollar tip for Manuel the caddy. i look at the fact that it costs tremendous amounts of effort to maintain and promote the tourist industry, and that the northern countries derive FAR more benefits from tourism than the hosts. but, i expect such observations from you; i deal with north americans and europeans on a daily basis
From: United States
well, i have news for you; tourism has a life cycle, and the latter stages are characterised by social, ecological, and environmental degradation. when such a day arrives, you and your buddies will simply take your golf bags elsewhere. what do you care? heck, its just the demise of a bunch of Dominicans; what does it matter?for host countries in the third world, tourism is like a guy giving you a job in a factory which makes highly toxic products; you take the job, because you need the money. 40 years later, you are supine on a hospital bed, on a respirator, because the materials you ingest have destroyed you organs.

Dreadlocks, great comments!
There R alot of guys out here in the world feelin' U!. Unfortunately, the world's full of guys out of touch but don't know it (i.e. McLame types). Speaking of which, FANNIN is 1 of those types who is bought by special interests from an MLB establishment who uses the RD as only a farming ground to cherry pick talent.
If FANNIN really wanted to do some good then he would use the law (i.e. DR-CAFTA) get these "personal" items of equipment for the kids & away from the police (he's an attorney).
I'd like to believe Tejano's comment & hope for education etc of the poor kids. But, I know for a fact, many kids skip school to play baseball instead whereas the MLB nor the non-profits are using their power over the kids to force EDUCATION. Again, I am NOT sure how you can pump young kids with steroids but this the system that people in power like FANNIN turn a blind eye to while flying on a corporate jet of affiliates (like a GM exec).
REALITY CHECK!
From: United States
JD, guys like TFISKE are the scum of the earth, in my assessment. they take a simplistic, superficial view of the country, because they do not see the people as being their equals. as far as they are concerned, all the dominican needs is a platano and some brugal. if he gets a low paying job in a hotel, then he can accomplish that goal. people like myself, who advocate forcefully that dominicans deserve more, because it is their country, and their resources that are being to create the wealth, are seen as malcontents "looking for a handout". on the contrary; we are looking for a sense and realisation of fairness. tourism brings externalities which tourists do not feel. the ecology gets destroyed, the society gets corrupted (drugs, robberies, murders, prostitution), and the culture suffers. land values escalate in tourist destinations, putting them out of reach of locals. their beaches become off limits. they are continuously exposed to pathogens brought from foreign lands
From: United States
which can occasion health crises. the government directs all its resources to tourist infrastructure, neglecting other pressing needs. then, what happens? multinational conglomerates set up hotels, bring in their management teams, bring in their architects, bring their furnishings, bring their equipment, bring their food, and import even their souvenirs. then they tell the tourists not to go to town, because they will get eaten by "the natives". so, the DR, and countries get a pittance for all their troubles, and TFISKE considers that acceptable. since the Dominican Republic is doing so well from the arrangement, why not suggest to the foreigners to accept the 20 cents per dollar that we receive, and give us the 80 cents that they do? i repeat; tourism has a life cycle; one day you are up,the next day you are a has been, and some bright new spot has replaced you; just ask Puerto Plata. so, we have to strike while the iron is hot, and collect our just due, before it is too late.
From: United States
you see,JD, i do not believe with making a man an unjust proposition, simply because his options are limited. that is called exploitation. TFISKE is always reminding us that we have few alternatives, and i remind him that it is exactly because the northern countries are aware of this that they refuse to make us a fair offer. if we had a gazillion diamonds in the ground, they would be dealing with us fairly regarding tourism, because we could take it or leave it. the victimisation never ends!

Oldman,
Its the truth we have it and you want it!
Just like our oil,gas and water you just gotta have it!
wake up get back in you dream world with dreads
I think he wants you to read to him again about the good old days!
Wow the 70's what an exciting time that must have been ha ha ha your a joke
How was the internet? I am amazed you old folks can use a computer! wow
I was in Toronto in the 70's I bought a car wow! who cares about you and toronto and the 70's old man hang it up your out of touch
It is not about providing more mits but instead, involoving MLB in education, health and other charititable projects. This alliance will build schools, libraries, community centers, clinics and attach their recognizable logos to them to promote education, health and community. It is a good thing.
Please don't send the money because it is bad for our youth to have dreams.
Forget the real reason we encourage our children in the states to get involved with sports.
Like discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork.
It won't work here.
Instead lets let them roam the streets at night.
Yours truely,
X
Guess what????? The bags of equipment, meant for the Barios and rural regions of the countryside.....STILL...sit in police custody....some 8 months later. Seems they want to collect a tax on this unselfish offering and support from those who wish a better life through sorts and social interaction. This has made both myself and my good friend...not to mention the organizer himself in Ottawa...look pretty stupid in the eyes of the media back home who where all prepared to further promote this effort.
Never again....
Nice you guys get it and it is nice to here some positive comments and feed back!
The odds are better than the US electing a black President but I guess he should have never had a dream either.
Once again the sad, un laid and un happy morons are back at it !
Get a life guys ..Get off your computer try a sport, spend some time with kids and teach them its a positive world not a negative one all the time> Wow wouldn't that be a different change fellas!
Pay the taxes and get after it!
I saw this nice gesture on TV but why all the hype just give the kids the gear without all of the media crap! I like the what they did but presentation was over board a bit.
How many major league farm clubs donate and build stadiums and how aften have you heard a word. Just pay and get them get back on the field.
I pretty sure I could get it in 30minutes what a joke!
I have spent alot of time down there and you just need to talk to the right guy
Go find a fired/retired general or talk to george bell
You are the moron Oldman its okay don' get that heart rate up how are things in San Fran you xxxx
2ndly....pay taxes on items that are not being sold...but donated to those in need? You best keep to your gated communities, as it is obvious that you haven't a clue.
Tell him I said Hi please, Thomas has a brother who is a judge tell him the story and see what happens. If what you say is true I am sure it can be dealt with quickly!
I will be there on Dec 5th Mike! for 2 weeks 6days in punta cana and the rest at Casa de Campo
I play golf with a retired general and with friends who run the Toros team
When I worked as a pro at Barcelo Punta Cana course George use to come and play
if you would like I would love to help out.
I Sorry you and your boyfriend lost the vote but shut your pie whole
I have a clue and sometimes it is easier to pay. They have a saying in the DR what is possible is impossible and whats impossible is possible.
Just get a hold of these guys and It will get taken care of
Ya whatever you say old man! stick to hugging your boyfriend and whining about the vote you lost
I would love to kick your xxxx on the course but then again I don't play with xxxx
I played on the mini tour , once again you no nothing oldman!
Go to cuba that is a famous place for guys like you your a sick man
Barcelo was the only course at that time and I was the pro there thanks!
I took over for Keno Montero a great guy and a hell of a golfer,
It was the only course a good layout but Barcelo have no idea about golf and spent no money on the course condition. Then the boom in punta cana roads, courses, businesses, bowling alleys, hospital, schools, yada yada you name it
That seems like yesterday so spare me the crap I no nothing about the DR
The place is great and the people are amazing , love the place and bought a house at la estancia
Its far from perfect but then again what is
If you and your man want to get married I don't care do it
As I dont' have to listen to you everyday complain its fine by me!
I not sure the catholic church approves but they have had a few problem also so what the hell get married in a state or country that allows it and best of like,
Post a picture so we can all see the happy couple from San Fran Treasure Island!
Are you the skipper or first mate ha ha ha
I have not heard you say a negative thing about the USA, Why is that?
scared they will kick you out and send you back to haiti or you just think it all good there!
we also have no snow here and 7 above celcius if ya can figure that out with your old formula
you probably are confused by that one and its true we have the best weed dude you guys cannot get enough of it.
Good news New Orleans is setting murder records and people are afraid to leave the house its a good thing they fixed that problem since the hurricane,
I think it compares to Bagdad for safety at night but then again I rather take my chances on the streets in the DR then New Orleans at night
Wake up people you have lots of problems in your yard fix them and stop getting involved with the rest of the world! you guys think your xxxx don't stink and bashing the DR when your country has similar issues
You guys didnt get enough love as babies!
To hell with it get rid of baseball, tourists, jobs, investment and go back to the good old days!
Wow you guys are something else
You judge and complain about anything and everything in the DR
yet you live in a society of hookers, blow, steroids, corporate scandals and fear! usa
Why dont you admit your problems and talk about fixing them and leave the DR to people who are looking for diffrent things in life! The families in the DR may not have all you do but it seems to me most are happier and enjoying life the best they can with what they can.
You guys on the other hand are just unhappy and i am pretty sure you couldn't get laid with a 1000 bucks.
You really need to focus on your problems and stop bashing the DR
Its as if you enjoy it!
What it means is your a loser! Your a whiner and a guy who just wants a free hand out.
Its everybodys fault but yours get a life man
You poor guy it must be hard living your pathetic life!
You talk bad about the DR, Canada, and say nothing about the country that took you in USA
Are you Haitian?
You whine and doing nothing but bashing other countries you say nothing of the country who adopted you!
I have no problem with the USA , they are not perfect and make mistakes like all countries!
see ya whiner
REALITY CHECK!
bla bla bla you guys are morons!
I am pretty sure tourists are capable of making a decision to leave the resort wake up!
You want to take what money Dominicans now make out of there hands! Morons
One day markets are up next day down! wow Did ya read a book to figure that out its called life man re so stupid! Check out stock market oil, commodities, etc blame blame it all on LF is gotta be his fault the world markets crashed! morons
I asked if you are from Haiti because you bash the DR all the time and have it out for the country. Plus you believe somebody always owes you something.
Why don'y you ask the ball players like David Ortiz if they used him JD? Is he is unhappy with MLB you guys are sad men with no lives or dreams. I feel bad for you but then again the world is what you make of it.
Poor dreads he is a victim
People are taking advantage of him and he cannot stick up for himself! I am crying for you
What does your book say to do? My book says get off your xxx and get a job and shut up quit blaming everybody else.
Your good at blaming others and evreybody is out to get you!
Dreads stop putting your hand out and try gettin them dirty its called work!
Your just mad because you must work to get what you want!
We have plenty of farmers in Canada who work hard , make little and enjoy a great life
Life is what you make of it you lazy bastard,
Do you even have a job? Who payed for your university?
Please tell us what university?
I bet you complained about the cost of school and recieved a handout of some sort!
Guys like you hate to pay

They paid for your education and then you left!
