New York.– The Yankees are reportedly nearing a contract of at least three years with slugger Manny Ramirez. Dominican newspaper Impacto Deportivo reported the deal is close and could be worth as much as $75 million.

Ramirez, who batted .332, with 37 home runs and 121 RBI's between Boston and the Dodgers, will be a major attraction in New York.

This would be the 3rd major signing of this offseason, all by the Yankees. They have already committed over $240 million to CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, and this contract would place them well past the $300 million mark for this offseason. They are still talking about adding one more pitcher, as well.

They need to put a salary cap on baseball...You have these small city teams that cant afford the offers that boston and yankees put on the table. I will not be surprise if some baseball teams start closing down. What the yankeees and boston have done , does not give other teams the opportunity to get a star in their team.

For 25 million a year and a chance to stick it to the Red Sox I think Manny would go bald if he had too.

this is speculative rumor that appears in few other places except this local publication....SUNDAY, 10:53pm: According to a report in the Dominican newspaper Impacto Deportivo, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez to a three-year, $75MM deal. The report says negotiations are advanced and an announcement would take place Monday or Tuesday. If true, this would be an incredible scoop. However, there is reason for skepticism. The money and timing just don't seem right. "

No I think this is the real deal. There have been Manny rumors buzzing here in the city for a few days now and Manny has made no secret about wanting to play for the Yanks and sticking it to the Red Sox to boot. I think we'll be hearing an announcement over the next few days. If the Yanks are throwing that kind of money at Manny he better jump on it. Yea his bat has pop, and that's an understatement, but he's not getting any younger and his defensive skills, which were not great to begin with when he was younger, have a lot to be desired. Take the money Manny and bring a ring back to New York.

Manny is a quitter and a trouble maker. He quit on the Sox. Amazing how the story of him pushing the 64 year old travel secretary of the Sox to the floor never made the papers here. He was angry because he couldn't get all of the 16 free seats he requested for an away game so he knocked the old guy to the floor. Wait till he pretends to be injured, so that he can sit out, like he did with the Sox. The Yankee fans will crucify him.

He would however, be a great government official. He is the embodiment of "what's in it for me" thinking.

Asked about Monday about a report out of the Dominican Republic that the Yankees are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez, general manager Brian Cashman said: "Not true."
We called the Impacto Deportivo report "extremely doubtful" last night and unless Cashman is playing coy that looks to be the case. New York may indeed end up with Ramirez, but there's been nothing to indicate that they're far enough along in talks that a deal could be completed this soon. Dec. 22 - 10:01 am et

is this finally dead ..................Contrary to reports out of the Dominican Republic, the Yankees are not on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez.

"If we are, I don't know about it," Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner told Newsday on Monday.

A report in The Impacto Deportivo said Ramirez was close to signing a three-year, $75 million contract.

Steinbrenner said the Yankees have no offers on the table to Ramirez or Mark Teixeira.

Isn't Karma unfailing? Manny and Boras conspire to have Manny quit on the Red Sox, a team who made Manny Ramirez one of the wealthiest ball players in the history of the game. He quits on them, beats up on the 65-year-old travelling secretary, true only to his trademark shelfishness. People scream of injustices in this forum all the time but find the temerity to praise Manny when he should have been sent to jail for assault. Then the Yanks sign Texiera (also a Boras signee) , thus eliminating a bidding contender from the process and possibly tens of millions of dollars and guaranteed contract years. Maybe Manny will now beat up Boras or sign with the Angeles or take the Dodgers last offer. Whatever the case, it will now be for a lot less money. Karma, it's going to get you!!
