GM Jim Bowden says he and other Nationals officials have spoken to both the FBI and MLB's investigators.

New York.– Federal authorities and Major League Baseball are investigating Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo for their possible roles in a growing financial scandal involving the signing of players from the Dominican Republic, several sources familiar with the probe told the press.

Anyone implicated could face felony fraud charges, sources familiar with the investigation said. Numerous MLB employees in the United States and the Dominican Republic are under suspicion in the probe, which allegedly involves the skimming of signing money allocated for Dominican prospects.

Bowden, a 23-year veteran of MLB front offices and a general manager on and off since 1992, is the highest-ranking official known to be under investigation.

Reached in his office Friday evening, Bowden said he and other Nationals officials have spoken to both the FBI and MLB's investigators, as have officials from other clubs. But he said neither the FBI nor Major League Baseball have told him he is suspected of taking part in the scheme or in any way suspected of wrongdoing.

Bowden said he was never asked about his own activities, and denied having any role in the scandal. "No, I've certainly not gotten that approach from baseball or the FBI," he said. "

There's obviously no truth to that. As far as the rest of this goes, they're probably better questions for the FBI or baseball." Bowden would not say what he discussed with investigators.

"We completely support trying to clean up the problems that have taken place, but there's no truth to any involvement regarding anyone here," Bowden said.

this sounds more like the old Dominican "mi commission " than a gringo skimming scam... This is a repulsive way to do business in this country from the tour guides on up everybody has their hand out saying " mi commission " I guess they just started paying these creeps for prospects on a per head basis and got caught trying to hide it in the package price....Jose Rios is involved because of his integrity or lack of it....you are going to hear a lot more about this in the US and here in DR....long overdue the exploitation of young people and dream killers at the expense of education....making it in the Bigs is like winning the Lotto

More on the same......" MLB also added four Latin American investigators to its staff, each with a background in drug enforcement. At least two of those new hires have been working in the Dominican regularly during the past three months, visiting every club's Dominican camp within the past month.

The MLB investigations unit is "looking at everything, A to Z, speaking to players, scouts, people that run the academies," the source said. The unit also is delving into the issue of access to, and distribution of, steroids to ballplayers in the Dominican.

The case of Wilder and the ensuing probe is distinguished from previous improprieties in the Dominican because it involves MLB team employees, rather than simply Dominican street agents, known as "buscones," or "finders," who routinely have taken exorbitant shares of bonuses from their players.

To: The angry While Guy, and millions like him.
Your last comment sounded a bit harsh to say the least..Meanwhile I'm reminded over and over again "AGREE TO DISAGREE....AGREE TO DISAGREE"......Just a thought, what if the price of gas was let's say..............Under one U.S $1.00 per gallon, millions of AWG would hail the Man in the White House as the best President our Nation has ever had, then drive off in your big SUV'S. Remember we are a Country at War........You can at least Support the Troops. Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw as a small Child that read "AMERICA..LOVE IT, OR LEAVE IT".

"You can at least Support the Troops"

oooo

The last poll, by Zogby, of the troops found that 72% wanted and demanded to come home now and hold Bush in contempt on account of the war.

Mrios doesn't now and never will support the troops.

Mrios only supports the scumbags in the White House whom the troops oppose.

FBI not only dominates the DR police, but increasingly the FBI replaces the Dominican police.

Let the Dominican police try its hands at law enforcement in the USA, they would be thrown in jail, tortured, raped, and perhaps murdered.

The FBI is looking into nothing but its curious cause these players are coming from outside of the U.S. and are making a lot of money. These young people who will make more money than any so called education will give them. As a matter of fact, their playing of the game is their profession and their education. For those who get to make it and who are serious about their future in the game of baseball: no one has the right to said different as to w their decisions of becoming a baseball player. I also believed that the FBI and the U.S government is envious of dominican players and of them being selected over their college players. One day they are going to make it a law to scout from the college players that graduate just like they do in baskeball and football for the main part. Everyone invoved in the selectoons of players gets something, especially the lawyers who represents them and thats no secret. SO WHATS THE BIG DEAL? Mr. FBI.

the big deal is the cheeseball garrapatas looking for " mi commission " and extorting money from the prospects ....Hector this is not an Anti Yanqui issue that you want to make everything you paranoid....they are trying to help these kids ...Meester FBI is involved is because the teams that pay the money are possibly involved in a federal crime involving the transfer of funds....Envious of illiterate athletes numbering in the thousands that should be in schools and not having their lives ruined by a tenuous dream few will ever get close to....I doubt it please think about it...... Envious ?...are you nuts

If they were envious of people and immigrants making money in America then there would not be that huge line at the US consulate here and at every other US consulate in the world trying to get in for the opportunities their own countries do not offer

Most of that big money they are paid remains in US banks buys property and is inevested in the US. And oh yeah uncles sams share of those huge salries. They get a paycheck and taxes are withheld just like anyone working in America. If there is state tax when they travel they have to paythose as well.

These boys from here can flat out play and they fill the stands so I don't think you will see the US government interfering with this for awhile.

Check this out:

NEW YORK -- Tom Glavine isn't scheduled to pitch during the New York Mets' four-game road trip in San Juan this week, but Glavine will still owe the Puerto Rican government approximately $42,000 in income taxes.

Tom Glavine may not even throw a single pitch in San Juan, but will have to reach into his pocket for $42,000 in taxes.
Glavine and his teammates, who will be the first to play the Montreal Expos in their new home-away-from-home of San Juan, will be greeted with a 20 percent income tax that was ushered through the Puerto Rico Legislature last week. Expected to generate $6 million to $7 million in revenue, the tax is scheduled to be signed by Puerto Rico Gov. Sila Maria Calderón on Wednesday, in time for the Expos' first homestand that begins Friday.
