SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic.- Money, periods of glory, recognitions; what are they worth if in the end you realize that you never represented your country, asked the himself glorious former player and Major League Baseball manager Felipe Alou, who says there’s no greater merit than to play under the honor and colors of your flag.
Alou, the Dominican sports figure who’s played the most roles within baseball, said during his life - not only in sports- to represent the country is the best that could happen to him and all Dominicans would have to feel proud if they had the chance to do so.
The former Major League star noted that the “millionaire” players, when they retire and evaluate their careers, will have many exceptional merits, numbers, recognitions, but will have the emptiness of not having represented their country and can no longer return.
“Some of those players will never again have the opportunity to play for the country, have played for money, have reaped great benefits, but the greater merit a human being can have is to represent their essence, their country,” the former leader in several Major League batting titles said.
