Felix Sanchez rests after the sprint in which he placed 6th.
Zoom Picture

Beijing.-  The Dominican Felix Sanchez, the 400-meter hurdles defending Olympic gold medal champion, failed to qualify in the heat Friday night in Beijing, and has been disqualified from advancing to the next round.

The defending 400-meter hurdles champion, one of the country’s few hopes to win a medal after his dazzling performance in the Pan American Games of 2003 and in Athens in 2004, appeared slightly overweight and lost the rhythm as he jumped the fourth hurdle, in the sprint won by the American Kerron Clement, the pre-heat favorite.

Sanchez had been nagged by left ankle injury and news that his grandmother Lilian Peña, 70, had died in San Diego, California, of unspecified causes.

Overweight? Huh? Way to pay back the misguided Dominican People who supported you.

The real tragedy was the murder of Wilson Santiago Rojas.
Former Pan American Games wrestling medalist Wilson Santiago Rojas was shot to death when he tried to prevent his cousin from being robbed inside a Santo Domingo electronics store.

This is too bad. Every athlete must eventually face the specter of injury, and also personal problems. Well props again to Sanchez for his 2004 medal, and good luck to him in getting healthy and returning to the op flight of competition.

felix must have been in really bad shape to get eliminated in the preliminary rounds. national pride is good stuff, but there are times when one should not try feats that the body will not allow. it would have been better to have gone out on top. then again, an athlete knows only one way: compete or die.

It must have been hard for him to race, after his Grandmother who raised him passed away, just hours before the race today.

sdkitten, why the antipathy toward Felix? can you give us a few examples of his arrogance?

Dreadlocks, that's people for you. When your up they are calling you a hero and riding the charriot with you but once you get off they forget that you carried them once. I am disappointed that he didn't qualify but this guy is injured and his grandmother died the same day..and he still ran..how many of us can carry that burden and compete against the best of the world. Also Jose NY why if someone disses the DR dominicans automatically assume the person is haitian. Guys get you act together..

hey Jabao, at least jose clarified his position , to a degree. the usual suspects , who know whom they are, believe that only haitians find issues with which to disagree regarding the dr.

dreadlocks, my "antipathy" towards Felix is of personal nature with Felix and has no business being discussed in a public forum, but it felt good to write it down!

AnthonyC: You are an idiot. Felix is Dominican because his parents are Dominican. He is Dominican just like AROD is Dominican, the latter just does not like to admit it.

Oh well...
I was hoping he would repeat.
But we have to understand, he is 4 years older, there are younger athletes now, so its just logical and natural....

Felix should have kept to his routine (US).....once he started mixing in the spot light in DR (you know what that does), he fell into bad habbits...plain and simple.

Funny your screen name mimics that of a prestigous Law School yet you have no grasp of the Law,

Sanchez was born and raised in the US. He lives in the US. He Studied in the US. He trains in the US.
The Only thing DOminican about him is that he had to race under the DR Flag because the US track and field union booted him.

AnthonyC: Actually the name not only mimics a law school but also a great U.S. Supreme Court Justice, whom you obviously know nothing about.

I was born and raised in the U.S. and yet I still consider myself Dominican. But if we follow your reasoning than I am not Dominican. ? Again, your an idiot.

Dreadlocks: It took me a while but I'm here. LOL

Benny,

By your insult it must mean your a Liberal. As for Cardozo he was one of the original Legislative Judges.

Ben, ask anthonyc to define Liberal. then give him an hour or so to look up something in wikipedia regarding the lexicon definition. then give him a few weeks to go over your old postings to see if you fit into the narrow confines of the definition. it should be fun.

Ha ha....I can not believe that anthonyc is still crying over Sanchez "not being" dominican. He really must have nothing better to do than follow every post or headline of Sanchez.
