Beijing. – Gabriel Mercedes’ silver medal in taekwondo is historic for Dominican Republic, because it’s the first time the country wins two Olympic medals.

After dispatching four tough rivals to reach the grand finale in the Peking Games, Mercedes had to settle for second place on the judges’ decision which favored his opponent, the Mexican Guillermo Perez, although the Dominican finished tied in points in the finals.

This is the country’s first medal in Peking’s Olympic Games, though the boxer Felix Diaz will win at least a bronze.

China occupies 1st place if you used the official ranking system based on gold medals.

But China apparently encountered a few problems in baseball today against the Cubans.

Men's preliminaries:

Cuba 17-1 China

China is better in the gym than on the diamond.

How did China manage 1?

"Cuba crushed China 17-1 in Olympic baseball on Wednesday with the trouncing called to a halt in the seventh inning under the sport's mercy rule. "

oooo

The Dominican bourgeoisie may be afraid of spoiling the national hero after it lavishly gave this guy a laptop.

The national hero is in the front row, second from the left.

oooo

GC, always the philisine.

Great players sometimes sing, not play, when they perform ballads or blues.

For example, listen to Sidney Bechet sing on the soprano saxophones when he does "Mean Blues" or Roland Kirk's sing on all the reeds [at the same time] on "You Did it. You Did It."

Some artists occasionally transcend the tonal and expressive limitations of their musical instrument, ascending in special moments to the agility and subtlety of the human voice.

Your Anglocentrism is showing, texasshoe. In Spanish the city is called Peking or Pekín. In German the city is referred to as Peking. And in Mandarin the city is called (insert Hanzi characters here).

goulet, do not open up the michael phelps can of worms. i give the guy all the credit in the world, but to say that eight medals makes him the greatest athlete of all time is not well thought out. if you have eight opportunities to win a medal, and you win them all, then yes, you have maximised your potential. but what about guys who participate in only one discipline, with transcendent performance? a javelin thrower, for example, cannot throw the javelin sideways, underarm, vertically, straight down, etc. secondly, there are no javelin relays to bulk up the total. i give the guy all the credit, but there are other guys who have also performed in spectacular fashion.

===================
Peking was a translation the westerners used before 1949. after 1949 the Chinese decided to use a transliteration of the word and thus changed it to Beijing. In the 80's China then decided to create uniform translations for all proper names. Peking and Beijing in Chinese are pronounced the same, its just the spelling in English that changes. Yo say " tomAHttoe", I say tomaytoe.

Dread,

Right on target. What he did was nothing less than amazing, but 2 of his medals were team efforts not just his. Take Mr. Bolt for example, he might be the fastest at the 100 meter dash but could he win a 400- he trains for speed not endurance.

michael phelps is a freak of nature, genetically realised to be the best at what he does. but the question becomes "is the best that he does better than the best that a pole vaulter does"? is he a greater athlete than the guy who wins , or even finishes, a marathon? better yet, is he greater than the guy who wins the decathlon, which is a composition of 10 disparate sports? yes, what about a decathlete who wins all 10 disciplines? is that 10 gold medals, or just one?

and , goulet, what is happening to you? you are actually making a lot of sense today. regarding the commercialism in sports, you could not be more right. i watched them interviewing the women gymnasts, and they looked so nice and cuddly, just so appropriate for a cereal box. then i looked at the huge woman who, as a long shot, won the discus. you think too many americans know that an american woman won the discus? know why? she is like six foot two, 230lbs, and does not have the physical personna that causes men to take a second look. so she has already started out in obscurity, even though she has as many gold medals as the little gymnastic twinkie who won the balance beam, the one we see every time we turn on the idiot box and it isn't phelps in the middle.

Sorry folks. I repeat: PEKING or PEKIN are how the city is called in SPANISH. I'm sure the Chinese prefer Beijing, but consider: This is a DOMINICAN TODAY website.

Yes, the article is in English, but given the main audience for this site speaks Spanish, there is no need to make a big deal at the author's use of "Peking" to refer to Beijing.

Using "Beijing" in an article geared to Spanish speakers would be akin to referring to Nippon as "Japan" in an article for Japanese speakers.

Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Trinidad Tobago, and of course Cuba are making the Caribbean proud and known throughout the world. I am extremely happy that DR (a poor country), in a distance land, was able to obtain two medals. One of the Dominican (the Taek Kwon Do fighter)is a member of the National Army (really poor salary) and the other (the Boxer) wash vehicle for a living. With almost zero support from the government and against the best from the world, they managed to say that sometimes "will" is stronger than money, publicity, steroids, social prestige, social status, etc. WELL DONE DOMINICANS! LET'S REPEAT IN ENGLAND 2012!

greenwave, i agree with you 100% it is something all the caribbean can be proud of. i was looking at olympic articles and reactions from around the world, and it was interesting to note that the prime minister of jamaica stated that the accomplishments of the athletes had made the caribbean proud, not just each individual country. it only goes to show what small, underfunded countries can achieve against competitition from far more privileged peoples.

now that the americans have managed to achieve the unthinkable, dropping the baton in both the men's and women's four by one hundred relay eliminations ,seven golds is not out of the question.actually, even if the americans had qualified for the relays, it is doubtful that they could have won gold.

The best all around athletes have got to be the gymnasts, wrestlers and boxers. The last two especially require every sub-trait of athleticism and not just a couple like most sports. It is too bad in both cases the sports have not been administered well lately.
