Congratulations to the hard working athletes.....but what a cheesy looking ceremony with blown up checks..... I dont see Ed McMahon' standing there but with those checks he should be

Ed is busy with Donald Trump trying to save his mansion! Not too shabby, win a gold get 200 grand from your government. Where are the corporate doners? Congratulations to them both.

They do not need any corporate donors to hand out a couple of million; it can be paid out of the petty cash box and there still will be enough change left.

Nemo,

You think there will be some left after they "retire" all of those generals?

The petty cash box recently got filled up again due to the sale of 1192kg of excess "washing powder" so IMHO the poor general's "handshakes" should be covered as well.

more reinforcements of the paternalism of Dominican politics. i see no problem with some sort of financial reward for the athletes, but why could this ceremony not have been presided over by the government minister under whose purview sports falls? because the people have to be constantly reminded that the prez is the daddy of all the land, and everything flows from him.

Now that your big boat has come in ... or, ah, is it a train ... patriotic comrades of olympics glory used your well-deserved mass of capital to help construct a socialist society, proletarian state, and, above all, a culture of ethics.

"The chief executive kept his promise of awarding the winners of a gold with RD$7 million and RD$5 million for silver," the DT explains.

No wonder they fought so hard and well.

Their opponents are lucky to be alive.

this paying for medals in this form ....follows the baseball precedent of paying for sportsmanship it is a slippery slope

very slippery, GC. and, in my humble opinion, for the president to hand out this largesse in front of the entire country is exceedingly bad form. i understand that the guys performed admirably, and a parade would have been in order. but a PUBLIC disbursement of material gifts debases the spirit of the accomplishment, in my opinion, and appears quite crass and carnival-like!

cheesy says it all. extremely bad taste, but our leo never misses an opportunity to promote himself. in this scenario, he is actually the star, as opposed to the athletes. he is the benevolent uncle, doling out the cash. the guy just has no style and breeding!

i am afraid not, GC. pounding away at large beers is a luxury i cannot afford at this time. i laboured at watching football. my favorite time of the year is at hand. may the election silly season hurry up and leave us in peace, so i can watch my games without the clutter of political talking heads and talking points.
