New York.- In recognition of Charlie Villanueva’s outstanding efforts in the community, and for his on-going philanthropic work, the NBA has granted the player the NBA Community Assist Award for August.

This is the second time the Dominican basketball player has received this award. The young star is being honored for his participation in the Tenis Para Ninos initiative, which has worked with the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, SolesUnitedSm and Crocs, Inc to give poor children in the DR 10,000 pairs of recycled shoes.

"While I've enjoyed participating in many community initiatives over the years, I feel that this project is particularly special," said Villanueva. As part of the award the NBA will give the CVF a US$5,000 donation.

The league presents the NBA Community Assist Award monthly to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who reflects the passion the league and its players have for their communities.

Charlie is very good, and he is getting better and better. The real point here is that he unlike many of Major League Baseball players is giving back to the D.R. Most of the players from the DR only care about having the bigggest SUV and building a mansion in the middle of a dump instead of giving back. It is amazing how many players come from San Pedro de Macoris, and are allowing their town to become a dump. I know the politicians are to blame but there is nothing wrong with taking an initiative.

I am so glad to hear things like this; many Dominican wealthy sport players especially Dominican baseball because we have so many in D.R should do the same. All of the D.R baseball players should unite and come together to help D.R. right now. They are paid millions of U.S. $ and once you convert that into peso's its hundreds and hundreds of millions of pesos that can help the whole country. If I were a millionaire I would help as much as possible; I understand I won't be able to help everyone, but a good portion. D.R. players should establish a group of professional humanitarian personnel including lawyers, politicians etc to over see how the money is spent due to corrupted officials.
