Cap Cana, Dominican Republic.– The Second David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic will be held from 3 - 6 December at the Jack Nicklaus designed Punta Espada Golf Course at Cap Cana, with the attendance of famous national and international sport figures.

The fund-raising event directly supports the David Ortiz Children's Fund which is dedicated to raising funds for children in New England and the Dominican Republic and providing access to the pediatric care they need to live full and productive lives.

Ortiz began the fund in response to a visit to a Santo Domingo hospital, where he encountered children in need of heart surgery who did not have the financial means for the lifesaving procedures.

"When I saw that, it was like I just signed a deal with children, telling myself, 'I've got to do something to help them out,’” Ortiz told the press last year.

In 2008, many of Ortiz's former and current teammates –including Tim Wakefield, Pedro Martinez and Sean Casey– participated in the event, and several athletes are expected to return this year. Even Yankees players Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera hit the links for Big Papi's cause.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase my home country –the Dominican Republic– while raising money for children who can't afford the health care they need,” Ortiz said. “Everyone who participates is making a difference in the lives of these children."

To date, the Children's Fund has raised over $1 million for children in need of critical medical care.

Ok. This is good, really good!!

How about having more Dominican sports personalities of notoriety join in and make this a really great event and give back to the community. That would be really nice and positive.

In many instances, I find that Dominican athletes in particular, having mostly come from the barrios, behave immaturely, selfishly and irresponsibly; most often than not, they sully Dominican reputation rather than promote it. I am definitely ashamed of some of them. One name that comes to mind is "Pascual Perez". His personality and attitude could best be summed as that of a total idiot. We have other similar examples today....you fill in the blanks.

These bigshots last year raised US$300,000 for a great cause.
Interesting is that their personal jetfuel bills were more than that.
Pass the hat with these guys.....hell, ARod makes $30,000,000 each year times 10 years (that's US$300,000,000) just from his bb salary. He and all the other huge money ball players should each write a check for US$300,000.

GO YANKEES #27 was sweet!!!
