Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic is playing against the Netherlands in the opening game of Pool D play on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Edison Volquez will start the game for the Dominicans, who will play as the home team. Volquez started the only game that the Dominicans won during their three exhibition games against Major League clubs this week.

Sidney Ponson will start for the Netherlands. Although he suffered the loss in the Netherlands' first exhibition game, he has the experience to take advantage of a Dominican club that is trying to shake off poor run production over their past two exhibition games.

David Ortiz is expected to be the cleanup hitter after Alex Rodriguez was removed from the roster due to a right hip injury. Willie Taveras (.571) and Robinson Cano (.500) were the top hitters for the Dominican team during their three exhibition games and are expected to be the sparkplugs for the offense together with Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez.

We are failing miserably! Our performance clearly erodes our Fatherland and Dominican baseball. With all the Dominican stars playing for money in the U.S. (or they put money ahead of Patriotism), the play quality is terrible.

This clearly states that all those Dominican baseball players in the U.S. are TRAITORS and after they used DR for them to get juicy contracts, this is how they repay us. This event is the only event where Dominican can elevate and celebrate the Dominican Fatherland but instead what we have is a reminder that Capitalism places ahead of Patriotism. The heck with Dominican players they can all go to HELL! Nederland is kicking our butt!

i couldnt agree with you more. son unos verdaderos ingratos. manny es la rata mas grandes de todas ella. he feel DR not good enough for him to represent it. dique perdidendo the holanda. what they should had done not allow our country to participate. who want to see his country being humiliated. from mini cuchi to amateur DR cannot win in fact we never qualify because it is full of people with cuna in the big league there is no cuna but ingratos.

Vacanos you are 110% correct Manny is a latrine! Netherlands (a soccer country) has completely humiliated us in front of the world. I can't believe that Felipe ordered two stealing bases attempts that failed and killed our late game attempt to tie the game. We were out played. Netherlands understood baseball and executed baseball play better than we did! All we think of is offesinve power and speed. Some of the Dominican players are using the World Baseball Classic to impress the scouts to get back at MLB (again money is placed ahead of Patriotism).

NO DOMINICAN SHOULD EVER EVOKE MANNY'S NAME AGAIN! The only country he plays for is the U.S. and/or MONEY!

I have nothing to look for anymore. I will wait for the Olympics and perhaps a poor military guy can upset somebody in some obscured sport (one that it is not influenced by money) and raise the Dominican flag again!

We should reciprocate the treatment. Since professional Dominican players do not play for DR we should not pay respect to them! They should have no social status in DR! Period! No more betting on them or celebrating them or following them.

Even in soccer, professionals attempt to play for their countries in the world cup but this World Baseball Classic is COMPLETE HUMILIATION!

Pujols, Guerrero and Arod all wanted to play, their injuries and inability to get insurance qualification is what dis-allowed their participation. Manny's non-participation was not because he thinks the DR is beneath him, he didn't play because he cares about nothing other than himself. The DR team is a stacked team that is the prohibitive favorite to win this tournament.

Imagine if the best US players chose to represent the US, what team in the world regardless of who would play for them could defeat a starting rotation of Lincecum, Beckett, Halladay, Sabathia with Papelbon and Chamberlain pitching in relief?

Devin, The A-Rod stuff is a last minute farse to avoid distraction from not playing for the U.S. and steroids. Injury is the perfect excuse professionals use to politely say no with no consequences! Watch him playing for the NYY because money is more important than the Fatherland.

I really don't want people using us (DR) when it is convenient and them dumping us when they have the change to elevate us. They can stay in the freaking U.S. and never come back to DR! FK ! THem!

letroudeballe,

This was definately a tough loss and I can't believe it myself but it is only one game. The DR team has not been defeated from this tournament, there is still alot more baseball to be played. There is no reason that the DR team cannot score 10 runs in the next game and carry a shutout. I'm not even Dominican and I have more faith in your teams ability than you. It's not over, far from it, this team will make some noise before it's done, you'll see.

Devin, we committed two fielding errors, and then we committed an execution error by interfering with a Nederland player on a run down. Then we killed rallies with WELL ANTICIPATED stealing bases try. Finally, most hitters wanted to hit the ball out the park (entertainment) instead of just getting on base (there was only one bunt for example).

The really bad news is that we play tomorrow to play the loser of the remaining bracket instead of playing on Monday and taking a rest.

Given the performance, you can't elevate the quality and execution of the play just by playing more games unless the opposition plays really bad. This is not a lottery!

There is no excuse. These latrines should be tossed to the side of the road! They are doing damage to the Fatherland! It is better to lose fighting hard against a potent opposition but when an AAA team exposes you the way Netherlands just did it is EMBARRASSING! Anyone who knows baseball will tell you!

Wow GC, you put a fork in them already? They're not done, not by a long shot. They looked a little jittery today, almost scared if that's possible considering the opposition. I still believe as does Las Vegas that they are the team to beat, best talent, best team.

Devin stop the nonsense. The only way they can make for this TROUNCE and/or THUMP is by winning it all! Otherwise, it is like GC said, "IT IS OVER."

I'm glad to know the DR bar have been set so high in baseball. Felipe is gotta execute better and not because these guys are MLB players to do what ever they want. I'm still positive we will win it all if not we still moving fordward. The only thing i don't like about the WBC is how the USA and Puerto Rico teams get unfair advantage. Why is Netherlands and DR playing in PR come on MLB stop this please.

I totally agree with you.Have yall heard the comments from the Nederlands Team they all agree that they were just lucky and had their best game and Dominicans had their worse and yet it was a 3-2 game i'm feeling good tomorrow Felipe won't make the same mistake on letting players do what they wanted. Why did Taveras steal that base come on Taveras you are a MLB you gotta know better then that.

Winning or Losing i'm feeling good that we are producing more quality players than anybody on planet earth.

To Mr Miguel Tejada:

Dominican Republic loves you. " El pelotero de la patria"

HAHA we are the only country in the WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC that is being restricted to use all of our talent by MLB. I think umcle sam is up to something here. But we been to worse scenarios before.

We OK just call it a wake up call Im just getting over the loss myself we hit rock bottom only place to go is up right guys? Manny just got his contract done recently say if he would have trained and played for us and got hurt who would pick him up? Just giving him the benefit of doubt (still upset)

Cejota,

We hitting .276 and thats considered a dead line up Imagen what would happen if all these guys wake up.My thinking would be that number would jump up to 360 or close. I feel good that we are the team to beat in the wold baseball. i never would have tough we would be sitting in this position. I still wonder what would happen if we didn't have any restriction to have our talent by MLB playing like USA. We have to focus on the bigger picture and celebrate every Dominican in the MLB and showcase our local talent in the baseball classic. We have to do it like Brazil does in soccer where they got restricted and the started using more local talent and it has worked.
