New York.– Years ago, Gilberto Reyes was a major league catcher. These days he's jailed. Reyes in late 2007 was driving a truck that slid off an icy freeway in New Mexico.
The vehicle toppled and spilled a load of furniture, along with hidden cargo - 420 pounds of marijuana, in bricks. Reyes, who's a native of the Dominican Republic, maintains his innocence and says he didn't know the load included pot.
The Associated Press reports Reyes was tried in February but the proceedings ended with a hung jury leaning toward acquittal. His retrial was set for July.
San Miguel County District Attorney Richard Flores vowed to target anyone who sells or distributes illegal drugs. The issue recently became moot when Flores dropped the charges.
The ex-player's short-term visa expired during the jail stay. Flores realized the feds could accomplish what he also wanted, putting Reyes out of sight.
A judge in March granted conditional release for Reyes, who was then seized by federal agents. They took Reyes to an immigration processing center in El Paso. He's now facing deportation.

The lesson is that if you are about to drive a cargo, you must inspect it or question it, otherwise you own it!
