Santo Domingo.- Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Many Ramirez has been suspended by Major League Baseball for violating the sport’s drug use policy, U.S. media reported Thursday noon.
The Dominican-born slugger allegedly used unspecified prohibited substances, said Major League Baseball, through the Office of Bud Selig, which added that the suspension is for 50 games.
According to unidentified sources quoted by several media, Ramírez blamed the positive test results on medicine his doctor prescribed for personal use.
Ramirez’s suspension will reportedly begin tonight and wouldn’t return to play with the Dodgers until July l 3.
The scandal comes just weeks after another slugger of Dominican origin, Alex Rodriguez, admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs while wearing a New York Yankees uniform.

Ramirez’s suspension will begin Thursday night, Major League Baseball said in a statement, and will cost him about a third of his $25 million salary this year. He will be eligible to return July 3.
Ramirez said in a statement released by the players’ association that he had been given a medication, not a steroid, that a doctor had recently prescribed him for a personal health issue........................SURE Manny so sue the doctor maybe you can get your money back hahaha

A couple of points......I have some insight into this story.....First, this has been known for a while now. That's the reason no team was willing to give him more than a two year deal. The expectation was that at the very least a story was going to come out accusing Manny of steroid use, etc., a la Alex & others. Second, Manny is not challenging the suspension, he's accepting the ruling. Third, he loses the salary for the games he's suspended, oh, about 8 million. And fourth, damn, this news sucks any which way you put it as a Dominican and/or a baseball fan.

This is bad for young players trying to get into the majors. Teams might not trust them due to HGH or lying about their age,

It is rumored the drug HCG a womens fertility drug is used by many to conceal the use of Steroids. If he has used drugs illegally, then the punishment is appropriate and hope it send him and the rest of Dominican players a message they will understand.

Manny Ramirez is always going to have this 50-game bust for performance-enhancing drugs hanging over him, no matter what he says, no matter whether he comes back strong in July, no matter that he is said to have tested clean 15 times in the past five years.
With his suspension on Thursday, Ramirez joins Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco and ultimately Alex Rodriguez and Miguel Tejada on the mental list of players who were dirty, or probably dirty.
Ramirez and his helpers can issue all the statements they want about his having been given a drug for a personal health issue and that it turned out to be illegal under current baseball rules, so he must technically take the blame. That is just not going to work......New York Times
