San Juan.– Brazil started the 2009 FIBA Americas Tournament with a hard-fought victory over the Dominican Republic, who led by 6 after Charlie Villanueva scored on the opening possession of the fourth quarter, but Alex Garcia heated up for Brazil, scoring 11 in a 3-19 charge that broke the game open.

The Dominican squad is made up by Carlos Morban and Juan Coronado, point guards; Luis Flores and Kelvin Pena, shooting guards; Francisco Garcia, Ricardo Greer and Franklin Western, small forwards; Charlie Villanueva, Jack Michael Martinez, Marlon Martinez, power forwards; and Al Horford and Alejandro Salas, centers.

Dominicans hadn't played in a FIBA World Tournament since 1978 when the team finished 12th.

That is a disappointing loss. WIth three NBA players (Francisco Garcia, Al Horford & Charlie Villanueva) I expected them to be more dominant.

Brazil has their share of NBArs as well, the fact that this is the first time DR has played since 1978, it is a good thing, it means the players are developing. Of course, my #1 fav sport is still baseball, followed by basketball, and then the rest of the sports such as Futbol, Tennis, Football (American), Volleyball and Hockey share a third spot.
