San Juan.– Argentina completed a comeback from a 0-2 start to finish second in its group with a dramatic 89-87 overtime victory against the Dominican Republic at the FIBA Americas Championship.
Argentina rallied from a 79-83 deficit with 2 minutes left in overtime to defeat as Pablo Prigioni of Real Madrid assisted on both baskets and hit free throws in the decisive 7-0 run to decide the game. Luis Scola led the winners with 30 points.
Al Horford led the Dominicans with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Francisco Garcia 20, Luis Flores 16 and Jack Michael Martinez 13. Charlie Villanueva only had 9 points by shooting 3-13 from the field but he helped with 10 rebounds.
The other qualifiers were Canada, Dominican Republic, Panama and Mexico. After four days of quarterfinal games, the top four teams will not only make the semifinals, but will win places in the 2010 World Championships, to be held next summer in Turkey.
