San Juan, Puerto Rico.- The Atlantic Ocean, 9,751 kilometers and 13 hours by plane separate Santo Domingo from the Turkish capital, Ankara.

This Friday afternoon, during 40 minutes an inspired albeit decimated Dominican basketball team, next to 24 others will work for the right to make the trip of next year’s World Championship.

The Dominicans got one step closer to return to international hoops’ top venue after 31 years of absence after yesterday’s 86-73 convincing win over Mexico, but must first face powerful Canada today.

I wonder if any of you have watched or payed any attention to this tournament, certainly the editor has not. Canada does not have a powerful team right now and the DR is a heavy favorite to win this important match-up. Although the DR team has a very good line-up that features 3 NBA players, they are a poor defensive team. Their defensive rotation is very slow and thus makes them vulnerable to long range open look 3-point baskets by their opponents. That has been there downfall in this tournament so far and the reason they lost to Brazil, Argentina and PR. They have to show better concentration and perimeter / rotation defense and they can win this tournament and do well in Turkey next year with a win over Canada tonight.

We have a great team that is stupidly vulnerable to three point shots. Once the Canadian team figured out how to play us (i.e. exactly how Puerto Rico played us... seriously, EXACTLY in the second half), we were done.

That is a tough loss, the betting line had DR as an 8 point favorite. Again the killer was poor defensive rotation, you can't win a game even if you dominate in rebounds, free throws and field goal pct. when you give up 52% 3-point shooting pct. to your opponent. Same formula in the PR game, DR had more rebounds and field goal pct. but gave up 53% 3-point shooting to PR, losing by 9. There was never any weak or strong side help up top when the ball was" kicked" back out by the opponent leaving them with good looks all night. 31 years since being in a World Championship with their best team ever suited up and still will not go to the big dance. That was a tough loss for DR.
