Santo Domingo.– Former major league all-star Jose Offerman threw a punch at an umpire during an argument in a Dominican winter league game Saturday night, the second time in 2½ years that he's attacked someone on a baseball field.

Offerman, manager of the Licey Tigers, appeared to hit first base umpire Daniel Rayburn in the face or neck with his fist during a heated discussion in a game against the Cibao Giants. Rayburn fell to the ground.

Offerman was detained by stadium security and taken to a police station to wait until the end of the game to see if Rayburn would press charges.

The Giants were winning 6-0 in the third inning of the final game of the winter league semifinal playoff series when plate umpire Jason Bradley ejected catcher Ronny Paulino for arguing balls and strikes. Offerman came onto the field to talk to Bradley, but ended up arguing with Rayburn.

It was the latest violent outburst by Offerman, an all-star infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995 and Boston Red Sox in 1999.

I didn't know that in the DR a person could be prosecuted only if the victim decides to press charges. I guess the thousands of eyewitness accounts are not enough to satisfy collaborative prosecution. I hope the article is incorrect or my interpretation is incorrect, if not I can't imagine the discernment for such a backward application of jurisprudence.

Getting arrested in the DR is no issue..... Your ability to deal with the situation is commensurate with the depth of your pockets.

Offerman apologized, and claimed that he was trying to kill a dangerous fly that was getting ready to infect the umpire, and possibly transmit a deadly disease.
He said that the umpire overreacted and is contemplating legal measures to be taken shortly, against the umpire.LOL.
BTW He has many witnesses in favor including some high ranking police and judges. LOL.
(He was detained by police but later released on his own recognizance, promising that he will return later)

yes, Devin. that is how it works here. so, you can beat the stuffing out of your female partner, and only get busted if she files charges. it is not like the USA, where cops are forced to arrest you if there are signs of spousal abuse. besides, you can settle the issue with a disbursement of cash.it is all part of the ass backwards approach to many other things. in the USA , the pedestrian is sacred. drive through a crosswalk with a pedestrian in it, and you are looking at a 250 dollar fine in some jurisdictions. in california, you only have to indicate with your fingers that you intend to enter the crosswalk, and traffic is obliged to stop. in the DR, the pedestrian in the crosswalk is importuned to make a run for it when Joaquin is coming at him bird speed in the Escalade.

This is where the Dominican baseball league needs to take a stand and spell this guy for life... No international player or umpire will come to share our games with such and attitude

Offerman took a swing at an umpire. To me, that means he should be banned from baseball for life, in every country, no questions asked...Hope the ump presses charges.

This is the second time Offerman attacks someone on the field. I don't understand why he kept his job after the first attack.

He should know what happened to Juan Marichal for that bat incident, i think that this incident is more serious than Marichal's.

They should make him donate a new baseball facility in a poor area in DR... Imagine if you cut this guy off on the road... He must come out of his SUV ready to hurt you

They should never have allowed Mike Tyson in the ring again during a bout. They should not allow this Offerman to be on any baseball field in any capacity during a game. As some have pointed out a stand full of people is enough evidence and if the blow missed it is of small importance - it is still assault, and his record of a previous loss of temper is enough. Ban Offerman he can still make a living as batting coach or in some such capacity, Hell he can be a sports commentator.
