Cincinnati.– The Cincinnati Reds agreed to a minor league contract with righty reliever Jose Arredondo on Friday. The deal includes a non-roster invitation to spring training.
The move is an interesting one in that Arredondo is set to have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow between now and spring training and will miss the entire 2010 season. However, because Arredondo has less than two years of major-league experience, he remains under the Reds' control past 2010.
Big things were expected from Arredondo in 2009 after the Dominican native went 10-2 with a minuscule 1.62 earned run average in 52 appearances during his rookie season for the Angels a year prior.
The now 25-year-old struck out 55 and walked 22 that season in 61 innings, but came back a year later and posted a woeful 6.00 ERA in 43 games, had an extended stay on the disabled list with elbow issues and was optioned to the minors midway through the season.
