Tokyo.– Dominican pitcher Maximo Nelson, once on the books of the New York
Yankees, has been arrested by Japanese police after a live bullet was
found in his bag at an airport in Okinawa.
Nelson, who had been in the
southern prefecture for spring training with the Chunichi Dragons, was
taken into in custody on Friday on suspicion of breaching the Asian
country's laws on gun and sword control, the Kyodo news agency reported.
The 27-year-old was signed by
the Yankees in 2000 and was a highly-rated prospect before being named
by the New York Times as one of dozens of Dominican Republic natives
caught up in a marriage scheme to fraudulently win U.S. visas for women.
All of the minor league players
involved were banned from getting visas for entry to the U.S. and
Nelson subsequently played in the Israeli league before moving to Japan
in 2008.

This guy is just fken stupid.= not really, a bullet over looked. I took a trip to NYC from DR stayed a week and left NY for Portland,OR . Stayed 3 weeks and left for NYC. Stayed 2 weeks and than was leaving Kennedy to return home when I was halted for baggage check. In the side pocket of my bag was a cig. Lighter “ yo, this no good” Ok take it, sorry. 3 weeks later leaving for Banica and Abreu I was packing my carry bag only to find one of my pistol clips with 9 bullets in the same pocket. Goes to show not being observant can cause big problems. Makes me worry what else they miss!

....by the way is that a D.R name "Nelson"? Many English names here because years past as now Dominicans did not function. The sugar mills imported thousands of Jamaicans. Same as Panama with the canal.

you can take the chopo outta the dr but ya kain't take the dr outta the chopo......your gun or range bag should never be your travel bag....keep them separate. Gun powder residue from the range on your bag will trigger a positive response if they wipe your bags at the airport...

before I pack I always completely empty each pocket of the bags I am going to use. My carry on is my day bag for my trips and I may have some tools or Leatherman in it. It is an easy over-site. It is just now not treated as a simple mistake.

This man, by his action has let down not only himself but family and country. This will contribute materially to the perpetuation of the negative image several of these athletes have created for our people.
It just totally baffles me how these individuals fail to realize the unique opportunity their athletic prowess has afforded them and how they've squandered them, thereby possibly eliminating singular opportunity to escape shackles of poverty.
I justt hope that other emerging athletes would take notice of these failures and resolve not to emulate them, thereby breaking cycle.

In 1937, the Empire of Japan invaded other parts of China, precipitating the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). In 1940, the Empire then invaded French Indochina, after which the United States placed an oil embargo on Japan. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States naval base in Pearl Harbor and declared war on the United States, the United Kingdom and Netherlands. This act brought the United States into World War II and, on December 8, these three countries declared war on Japan. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, along with the Soviet Union joining the war against it, Japan agreed to an unconditional surrender of all Japanese forces on August 15 (Victory over Japan Day).
