Quebec, Canada.– Even though unbeaten Dominican Joan Guzman failed to make weight, South Africa's Ali Funeka could have a shot at the International Boxing Federation lightweight belt on Saturday.

The rematch of a controversial 2009 draw was still tentatively slated to go ahead, but Guzman, who weighed in nine pounds heavy at 144, can't claim the vacant title. Funeka made weight at 135. The fight will be called off if Guzman weighs more than 150 pounds at a Saturday morning weigh-in.

Two judges scored the first Guzman-Funeka bout a draw last November in Quebec City, setting up a rematch that will be the third title bout in a row for Funeka, 30-2 with three drawn and 25 knockouts.

Guzman, 29-0 with a draw and 17 knockouts, is a former junior featherweight and junior lightweight world champion.

Yvon Durelle's light-heavyweight championship fight against the great Archie Moore on December 10, 1958 at the Forum in Montreal, Quebec, is one of the most memorable fights in boxing history. Listed as a 4-to-1 underdog, the bout made Yvon Durelle a legend in Canada, gaining him near cult status for his performance. In one of the first fights broadcast coast-to-coast on American television, Durelle stunned boxing patrons by knocking the champion down 3 times in the first round. Under boxing rules today (except those of the World Boxing Council), the fight would have been stopped after three knockdowns in one round and Yvon Durelle would have been world champion. Also, he missed an opportunity when, after the first knockdown, he stood over Moore watching for several seconds before returning to his corner. As a result of his delay, the referee had to wait to begin the count, and Moore made it to his feet at the count of nine. The Fight was a sensation

The first fight was a support fight on the undercard of a Bute match. Bute is the local hero.

Devin how are you so sure it is an integrity issue? Perhaps he really thought he could make it. There are fighters who can cut 20lbs in days. His metabolism failed him again, and he should really get the message that he is no lightweight. But I'll wait until more of the story gets out before I slam the guy's reputation.

Hi Manny,

I read a morning report on the fight where Guzman's own manager, Jose Nunez said that 10 days ago Guzman weighed 145. How much effort do you think Guzman put in to lose a single pound in 10 days? Yes there are fighters that can lose 20 lbs. in days but those are higher weight division fighters, not guys that are supposed to weigh 135 lbs. and I remind you that this is the SECOND time that Guzman has come in overweight for a Championship fight. Please know that neither time did the Guzman camp let their challengers camp know that he would not make weight even though they knew far in advance that they were not even close. Thus both challengers had to make the difficult sacrifices of making weight while Guzman did not. According to Mr. Nunez, Guzman went to sleep at 148 lbs., under the new terms he cannot weigh-in at more than 150 lbs. At his current 148 lbs. he would be eligibe to fight at Jr. Middleweight, I don't think he would have a good career in that div. at 5' 6".

Devin my all time favorite Roberto Duran was only 5 foot 7....like the WB Tasmanian Devil ....Guzman will go on to be a nobody and a catcher

Well, Mr. GC, Roberto Duran is an all-time great so maybe any comparison is not so fair. By the way,
I've met and spoken to Mr. Duran and he told me himself that although he is know as a Panamanian legend, his father was Mexican. Regarding Guzman, he has excellent talent and world class ability. That's what makes this situation even worse because he could have had a very good and long time career as champion in the lighter weights. He could have made major dough and fought to sold out crowds at the Mecca of the NYC venues, MSG (not the Chinese food additive). It's a shame to see wasted talent at any endeavor.

A real professional would have canceled when he knew he couldn't make wieght and let Funeka & HBO find a replacement, but Guzman is a greedy piece of garbage in addition to being undisciplined. He knew Funeka & his team would be coming all the way from Africa and would have little choice but to fight him anyway because they'd need the money. So, in the end Guzman gets paid (-25% penalty) today, but he'll never be on another HBO card in his lifetime and wil now have trouble scheduling meaningful fights (This is not his first offense), so his future is very much in doubt (as it should be).

now watch him blame the trainer, or the cut man, or the referee, or the ticket takers, or the parking lot attendant, or his mom, or, all of the above.

riosm, i saw something really funny today. i was watching this game of dominoes, and this guy called Manuel passed when he actualy had a card in his hand which he could play. at that particular table, that gets you ¨cien ¨, or 100 points. that put him over the top, and he lost the game. he was furious, and started to scream at two haitian guys, saying it was their fault, because they were talking on their cellphones and ¨confusing ¨him! i kid you not!!
