ANAHEIM.- Boston Red Sox designated batter David “Big Papi” Ortiz and Florida Marlins infielder Hanley Ramirez put on a homerun show Monday night, when the former won his first championship by connecting 10 roundtrippers in the last round of the “Homerun Derby.”

In the end it was Ortiz winning 11 to 5, in the slugging contest staged the night before the 81st annual Major Leagues All-Star Game, to take place today in the Angels Anaheim Stadium, pitting the National and the American leagues.

The two Dominican ratcheted the contest by reaching the last round with 21 homers each, but ´Big Papi´ wasn’t to be denied the championship by tagging 32, to Ramirez’s 26.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — David Ortiz delivered his big bat and booming personality to the Home Run Derby on Monday night. But when a diminished slugger can conquer a diminished field — as Ortiz did, defeating Hanley Ramirez in the final round — it may be time to wonder whether the derby, with home runs declining and many of baseball’s most prominent sluggers giving it a pass, has lost some of its juice.
Hanley Ramirez finished second in the Home Run Derby to David Ortiz in an 11-5 final round.
Television ratings for one of the staples of the All-Star events remain strong — more than eight million viewers tuned in last year — as does local interest. A near-capacity crowd once again turned out for the derby, which is the star of the Monday night festivities that precede Tuesday’s game.

Yes, homerun numbers have gone down... Baseball is becoming a snooze fest, bring some kind of legal juice back so we could see those homers again. The fans love the home runs

The NBA is hot right now and will continue to be a hot sport. Mlb is slipping a bit... Everyone was watching when Sammy, Mark, and Bonds were crushing the ball out of the parks daily...

Even blutarsky would wear his sosa jersey every day during the season

Are we having fun yet? .....two Dominicans enter the HR derby and they finished first and second, isn't that an accomplishment.
