Good news. I see that Johnny is misspelled Jhohanny. Or should it really be Johann? Either way, Dominicans should take better care to spell their names correctly. Currently there is Jhonny Antonio Peralta, shortstop for the Detroit Tigers, who while recognizing that his name had been misspelled by his parents at birth has nevertheless continue to use it!

@Atabey,
LOL!!! agree .... Two of the most irritating things for me is when we Dominicans want to be cute and make up names for our kids, or when we give them foreign names which end up misspelled!...Or worse, give a boy a girls name! LOL!!!

There is not such thing as the "correct" spelling of a proper name, except the spelling used by the parent/s when naming the child. You could name your child Johnie, Johnnie, Johnny, Johny, or Jon and every single one is correct. I know plenty of United Statians who don't speak a work of Spanish and have given their kids Hispanic names, such as Amanda, Alicia, Adriana, Carlos, Juan, Antonio, etc. Dominicans are not the only ones using "foreign" names, this is pretty much done worldwide. I know we are talking about the spelling, but hey, that's how new names get started.
As far as boy/girl names is concerned, there are quite a few that are now considered unisex. My neighbor's name is Michael and she is a girl (as American as apple pie). Know 2 men named Ashley, another one named Leslie.

Amber it's not that spelling you have stated that's at issue here, it's "Jhonny" for Johnny and other clear misspellings due to poor education on the part of parents.

@Amber,
I bet that neighbor of yours that goes by the name Michael is your daughter? And your name is Amber did you changed your name and what was it before? What's wrong with Inez? By the way this whole think is not about the spelling of the names, is about Dominican pride and identity. Dominicans parents don't misspelled the names, because they want to be different they do, cause they spell it how its sound.

@Amber,
Sorry..I didn't mean to imply that only Dominicans give their offspring foreign names. But is my opinion that, if you are going to use foreign names then, find out how are they spelled in that country. For example, don't name the poor baby "Maykol" when you wanted to name him "Michael". A different example, in Catalán "Joan" equals "John" a male name in Catalunya, but in USA, is clearly a girls name...and trust me this guy hates it when he has to explain the reason of having a girls name in his passport!!! LOL.. :)

Atabey, I understand that lack of education is probably the most prevalent issue here, but at the same time, using phonetics is permitted when it comes to names that you want to give your children. I have a granddaughter named McKinze because her college-educated, 100% American mother didn't know the standard spelling of the name.

ELPAPA, for you info my neightbor Michael is older than me, and her children and mine were classmates. Yes, Amber is my middle name, which is what I go by. I am also Dominican and very proud to be one

Congratulations to the gold medalists!
