With his right forefinger Robinson Cano’s father Jose pointed toward where his son was going to blast one and win the Homerun Derby. And so it was.

The Yankees star infielder didn’t disappoint him, and also became the fifth Dominican to do so.

First to win the Derby was Sammy Sosa (2000), them Miguel Tejada (2004), Vladimir Guerrero (2007) and David Ortiz in 2010.

“I thank God, my mother, my teammates and San Pedro de Macorís for the support received and especially my father, who kept pitching to me,” Cano said after slamming 12 roundtrippers in the final round, for a total of 32.

Deja vu of better days in professional baseball, is the performance of our own Robbie Cano, from San Pedro de Macoris.
The entire country is so proud of both Cano's and their public example of strong family ties, clean and healthy living, and remarkable athletic performance under pressure.
Kudos to the Cano family for a home run derby that will be unforgettable, and mark the pace for many years to come.
The only thing that I wished for, that he continue his slamming beyond the 12 homers, as he had few outs left.

After 12 the Canos didn't want to continue. Why for? These exhibitions take a lot of energy from the hitters. You could see it in their faces. Not saying Cano could have forced himself to hit a few more, but what would have been the point? The Championship was already in the bag. By attempting more HRs Cano might have caused an injury.

Congratulations to the Canos and the DR.

Making a solid and irrefutable statement is very important in sports as well as in other endeavors. By continuing his quest for more home runs, disregarding any "caveats" or considerations, and completing the amount of outs that were allowed according to major league rules, more home runs were very possible and probable.
Records are made to be broken, and Robbie Cano could have continued his HR slamming prowess,
until the full amount of 10 outs were used. Setting an even a bigger HR derby record, and further displaying, for all to witness his magnificent swing, for all the world to behold in awe.
We must not forget that major league sports are basically for "entertainment" and every minute of the HR derby, cost millions of dollars to advertisers, and what better free publicity a young 28 year old player, hope to have?

The record he would have been shooting for was Bobby Abreu's 40, I believe, and that my friend was just not in the cards. Cano won and his swing was highlighted for the sweet and powerful stroke it is, along with Adrian beautiful swing, so he got what he wanted. Chasing a record and possibly getting injured would have taken a lot of the enjoyment out of his win.

What was to me most touching was the display of Father to son relationship. Wow! That was something to watch. Cano senior was in top shape pitching for not only Cano but for David, too!

As someone said, whenever you think back to playing ball with your dad in the backyard or park a dream set-up like last night's is the stuff of Hollywood movie making. Something out of the Natural.

Again, Congratulations the Canos and many more victories to come. They made DR proud.

Your historic baseball stats are wrong:
According to Jayson Stark, from ESPN:

"In 25 years of Home Run Derbies before this one, only two men -- Ortiz and Abreu -- had ever hit 11 homers in a final round. Now two men had just done it back-to-back. Incredible."

So 12 homers in the final round, IS a new record. More would have been a milestone.

Bobby has the record for Total HRs in a Derby with 41. 27 in the first round.

But my point stands: 12 won the Championship AND established a new record for HRs in the final round.

No sense in getting injured.

"He also smashed the mark for total homers with 41, besting Miguel Tejada's 2004 total of 27 by the second round. Abreu hit 11 in the finals, another derby record, to Rodriguez's five in an event that lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes."

I agree with Atabey on this. Not only was an injury a possibility but that constant swinging for the fences could affect that "sweet swing" Robbie has, as other hitters have been affected, particularly the aforementioned Bobby Abreu who lost his power after the competition for the rest of that season.
