Vancouver, Canada.– The United States women’s team opened the Concacaf Olympic qualifying tournament by thrashing the Dominican Republic, 14-0, on Friday night in Vancouver.
However, the most lopsided win in the U.S. women's 27-year history was tempered by defender Ali Krieger's right knee injury, which was described as serious and was to be reevaluated Saturday. Any major ligament damage could keep her out of this summer’s Olympics in London.
While a victory over a developing team such as the Dominican Republic (ranked No. 88 in the world) is still a formality for the U.S. team, getting to the Olympics is not. The Americans had to win a backdoor playoff against Italy to get into last year's World Cup after the loss to Mexico in a qualifying match.

Team USA should have passed the ball, especially after the first half and played ball possession a la Barcelona in such an over-matched game. Some people are saying that goals against dictate otherwise, but I see little chance that such an outcome will happen. Besides, the fact that the coach was cheer-leading goals 10-14 really puts it into prospective. With such a blow out going, you would think she would have been calmed and circumspect.
Congrats for gettin there chicas... keep working hard DR team.
The announcers (Americans themselves) were a bit critical of the U.S scoring goals past 10. They were saying that after 10, rather than trying to score, the should simply practive other techniques they may come across other games, but in their defense, if there is a tie of some sort with any of the other pool members, goal differentials could make a difference. The U.S. took it easy in the World Cup against supposedely weak teams, and beacause of it, they pay badly for it, so I don't blame them for the goal minded offense.
