Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government will give RD$10.0 million (US$256,000) to each athlete who wins an Olympic gold medal in London , the Vice president announced Tuesday.

Rafael Alburquerque’s statement was part of the ceremony to hand the Flag to Dominican Olympic Committee president Luisín Mejia, in the National Palace. "We’re sure this delegation will play a dignified role of which all Dominicans will feel proud, because there’s no doubting the progress our athletes have made in different disciplines during these years."

He said it it’s important that Dominicans athletes see their flag wave from the Games opening ceremony, “and know that, though far away, from here we’ll be following their performances in all competitions.”

Sports minister Felipe Payano also announced that RD$1.0 million will be given to each of the women volleyball team’s 12 players if they win the gold.
