Mejía confirmed yesterday that gymnast Yamilet Peña will receive an apartment from the
government in recognition for her contribution to
Dominican sport.
Peña, who achieved sixth place at the London Olympics,
will be given the deeds to her apartment at a ceremony this morning at the National Housing
Institute (INVI) headquarters on Alma Mater avenue in Santo Domingo.
Peña was admitted to
the National Police sport corps by order of president Leonel Fernández. The gymnast will also
receive a scholarship for her university studies from the Police Social

She is a pionirer on her class for DR. I hope it keeps growing the sports of gymnastic .

I agree...this makes more sense than giving away the loot to a foreigner posing as a Dominican...one who likely will not be back to this country nor do anything for this country until the next Olympic paycheck becomes available.

Had Felix run for the US, he would have won anyway. It is a great tribute to his ancestral home that he chose to run under their flag. As an Olympic gold medalist, in the US, he would have made much more than a palsy $250 in endorsements. Cable channels alone would have paid him millions to be a commentator not to mention every product that's advertised on any Spanish channel would have given him $$ millions in endorsements. capitalism at work. he chose to honor is grandmother instead of the dollar. now, how many Punta . . . Mike would have done that?

Puta cana, Felix Sanchez is Dominican regardless where he was born, have you heard of Jus Sanguini?
It says, if one of your parents is Dominican, it does not matter where you are born, if you choose to have the Dominican citizenship you can have it.

Ok...I understand....I am not Canadian...I am Scottish Irish, British and German.
I guess I should revel in the success of all of those countries, although I have never lived in any of them. Makes perfect sense to me!

Of course he would have won running for the USA. That is where his opportunities came from. We parade around here like he is the product of the excellent system we have here. Lets be real...aside from having a trace of Dominican blood in him...that is as close as he is to being a Dominican. He could probably run for an African nation as well...given that his original bloodline likely traces back to that continent.
What the government did was gave money to a surrogate runner. An American dressed in red white and blue...but a different red white and blue.

PuntaCanaMike,
Are your parents from said countries? Get a clue. You have failed to prove your point quite miserably.

LOL...all this over a guy who has done nothing for this country. What benefit to this country will giving 250,000 to an American be? How many kids here locally could benefit from the same financial generosity from a country that hasn't the money to give away in the first place?
I understand and total respect the bloodline issue, but still do not consider this guy to be a Dominican...simply an American of Dominican decent. He has never lived here...he did not train here...he has not contributed anything here. We should not be getting that warm fuzzy feeling of Olympic greatness until someone who lives, trains and contributes here does well.
Yamilet Peña is a very good example of the above...kudos to her.

You should READ about CULTURE and what makes YOU a canadian, by your statement you show great ignorance on the subject, do you have full BLOOD from those places? in other words, were your parents from those places? did you grow up eating food and enjoying music of those places?

So it is great that the D.R. rewards a athlete who lost?
And what does the D.R. do to reward those who achieve academic excellence?

AC,
The fact that Yamilet was even in the top 6 in the Olympics! is a major victory for the DR. She was very realistically one solid landing from metaling at the games. Her routine was the highest or most demanding one in the competition. For a small nation-state often defined by incompetence and disastrous outcomes at the games, her 6th place was excellent. Also remember that her performance is being used to promote this sport in DR. I say the rewards could yield many future talented girls to get involved. And that's the goal: Grow the sport.

the SHE was the ONLY latin american woman present that qualified FOR THE FINALS, YES you read right, SHE HAD TO QUALIFY against the best athletes ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, she was actually the ONLY one from the WESTERN HEMISPHERE outside the US, she end up 6th on the ENTIRE WORLD and actually MADE history reaching where no one has ever gotten before...she ACHIEVED HER POSITION against HUNGER, NO training facilities and a House that was Literally falling apart ON HER, of course your comment shows your evident and EPIC ignorance on the subject, that is why people should READ, investigate AND THINK BEFORE POSTING and not backwards!!!

What a nice government you have in DR. Your athletes, save baseball, do not have adequate training facilities, have houses collapsing on them and lack access to basic education. No wonder the dream is to leave the island for the US.
