Santo Domingo.- With a time of 49.24 in the 400-meter hurdles, Dominican Republic’s first Olympic gold medalist placed first in his round and advanced to the semifinals in Friday’s competition, with a commanding lead in the race from start to finish.

Felix Sanchez led the field, with place Briton Jack Green second with 49.49, and Senegal's Mamadou Kasse Hanne third with 49.63.

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday morning.

The good news comes after dismal performance in boxing and disappointment in women’s volleyball.

The country still hopes for medals in track & field, gymnastics and taekwondo.

I saw Felix Sanchez qualification run, and he looked better than ever, in great shape, put on some muscle, and I am betting he will beat the Puerto Rican favorite under 48 seconds.

Felix Sanchez, despite being an American by birth and upbringing (but with Dominican parents) has done more for the prestige of the Dominican Republic than all other Dominican sportsmen put together. Any Dominican sportsman (there is only one sport, baseball - cockfighting and feminocide are not sports) with any potential can't wait to ditch their country, become an American and play for an American team.

When ever I hear people berate, ridicule, belittle, undermine and undervalue the efforts of others regardless of the discipline, you must remember everyone must start somewhere. There is a begining and also an end to everything.

No one starts as number one. It takes time, energy, will and great effort. Just competing in the Olympics in and of itself is an accomplishment and worthy of praise, perhaps even a goal medal.

There have been 7 major world empires and today they are mosty all but gone and those that remain are nothing in comparison to what they were in the past. The Romans, Greeks, Babylonians, Assyrians, British and others, once produced great athletes and now what ?

We have the potential to be just as great and as good as any one of them and we will, sooner or later and who care if it is later, but we will be number one and all it takes is just one medal to set the pace and the rest will be history. Just remember a tiny acorn will one day become a great oak tree.

guillermone, what makes you think that the Dominican Republic has " the potential to be just as great and as good as any one of them "?

Failure to perform at the Olympics is not important. Failure to perform in education, law-enforcement, infrastructure development, environmental protection and social equity does.

Roy is clearly a disgrace, I also tough the same of him. Just a troll like any other foreigners, it's very damn simple, why come here if you don't like DR, even worst live in our country and then come trolling here and talking shit about it. He really has serious issues.

You can clearly see he's not Dominican, even if he lives there for a while he hasn't adapted nor understands at all why we feel so proud of ourselves as he isn't one. Only a true Dominican feels proud for his/her nation, regardless of our present circumstances : )

Roy feels good by making others feel bad. This is how he feels better about himself by constantly pointing out faults and weaknesses of others. He is no doubt quite a miserable chap and It is his way to compensate for his own inadequacies

People who live to find fault in others use it as a way for them not to have to deal with their own inadequacies. If you make people focus on the fault of others, the less likely they are to focus on their own. Constantly pointing out faults is a disturbing characteristic because besides the fact that we are committing an unaccepable offense, we fail to recognize our own shortcomings and continue living the illusion that everything about us is without flaws

Clean your own backyard before you tell others to clean theirs. When you criticize, complain, or speak ill of others, be sure that others have no reason to do the same to you. It would be better to avoid criticizing other people for good. To criticize, complain, or condemn others is futile

I haven't seen much of that. Pride and humility are opposites.
Are you prepared to say that the Dominican Republic has NOT failed in the areas of education, law-enforcement, infrastructure development, environmental protection and social equity, let alone the Olympics?
Apart from producing the most wonderful women in the world, and a few good American baseball players, what actually has the Dominican Republic done to be so proud about?

ingle23, is absolutely correct.

When Britain could no longer send their convicts to America (after the war of independence) they sent them to Australia. Yet despite this, and also despite the fact that much of Australia is arid, and is far from the major markets of the world, in less than 2 centuries has become one of the richest, most compassionate, law-abiding democracy in the world.

Compare that with where the Dominican Republic is after over 5 centuries of "civilization".

I would dare speculate that it has to do with a romantic disappointment. He was bi-curious and felt insecure with what for yeas had been a dormant attraction to strong, muscular, very dark skin males

Unable to handle a sudden, unexplained, unfamiliar feelings, particularly at a late stage in life and not knowing what to do, secretly sought the advice of a local neighborhood curandera. She recommended an alternative, but effective treatment, the Moringa, the panacea for all ailments, a cure for everything, even attraction for the same sex.

Unfortunately, due to a language barrier, misunderstool and instead of trying this new miraculous herb, confused it with Moronga. Excited, he found himself a sizable, square shaped phallic treatment from an undocumented Haitian nicknamed "culebra" who failed to give him the results he had expected. It has been quite a disapointment. He fellt defrauded, traumatized from this painful experience and he has been suffering from this ever since.

When Roy gets into Australia vs DR comparison, he is simply telling you that he suffers from penis envy. He wants to get into a competition with my penis is bigger then yours but knows he is going to lose. And I think this might have something to do with his fears and frustrations.

I'm already seeing the need to form an organization to fight for our country. there are tens of Haitians NGO's fighting to force on us a very vast Haitian agenda, and they are doing it with our tax pesos.
We must beat these people at their own game:
1-we MUST not hire Haitian labor
2-we MUST hold accountable our authorities for letting this get out of hand
3-we MUST elect into office Dominican men and women with a real nacionalist vision
4-we MUST educate our people about this issue
5-we MUST send all the illegals back, and then give a work permit to those that would be let back in
for a season job
6-if such worker abandon his/her job to persue something else not related to what this person was hired, this person should lose the right to come into our country forever
7-all Haitian NGO's should be consider illegal in our territory
8- we must spread the word about this issue to our friends and families
We must fight for our future as Dominican.

Yes we indeed have failed in these, areas? but what can we do about it when is the old farts in the government who don't know how to run a country who are to blame in most parts.. Have you seen how many Dominicans from all groups have being continuously protesting an increase in education by wearing yellow shirts ? That's what I call people that care for the future of their country!

(addition) Please don't say we have lack of infrastructure because we do. Maybe projects have being built in the city and towns, also the massive highway project that connects the capital to the tourist region in the east and much more like the metro, modern train line from SD to Santiago etc ..
But regardless of what that shouldn't stop us from being proud people! You don't understand/ comprehend this because you're not Dominican at all.. only us understand.

Anyways let's all just laugh at his rambling / trolling, we all know better about DR and are proud of it no matter what.. :)

2) A paid troll?
3) Jilted in love?
4) A moron?
5) Closet homosexual?
6) Haitian?
I am happy to say I am none of the above. Anyone Dominican who faces reality (in the minority it seems) will know that I am

elanonimo,
Yes I have driven on the new highway to the Samana Peninsula and it is very nice, likewise the new road towards Pico Duarte. As for the "modern train line from SD to Santiago" I must have missed it. However a couple of good roads and a Metro with two very short lines does not constitute adequate transport infrastructure. I assume you have been to the USA. They have transport infrastructure.

Hey I forgot to mention the country's horrendous death-toll on the roads. I did mention the wonderful women, and for me, that compensates for all the negatives.
