London.–  Dominican sprinter and world junior champion Lugelin Santos finished first in his heat clocking 45.04 to advance to the 400-meter semifinals in the London Olympic games.

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius, who finished second (45.44), made history becoming the first double-amputee to compete at the Olympics.

"I know Oscar was the protagonist in the race," Luguelin told the press.

The sad part about the race was that it was dominated by commentary on Pistoriuos and not Santos. Even in victory that commentary was about Pistorious; it's as if Santos' victory was an afterthought. Very poor media commentary by the staff.

Sorry, josearias, I didn't understand your question.

However if every athlete can represent any country he chooses, then which-ever country pays the most money will win the most medals. Dominican residents obviously don't have the talent to win but they have a president happy to divert sorely-needed funds to buy it. Are you happy about that?

The double-amputee has an unfair advantage over all the others. He has a spring action that can propel him fast forward past most others. And, his ankles don't get sore.

It's totally not fair to the others who worked so hard to get there. He should not be in this competition. Then again, it's all now about feel-good stories for TV rating.

Even the glory is being taken away from Santos. Sad :(

Maybe Lionel should offer to pay for the operation and prosthetics for any Dominican athlete to become a double-amputee and win the 1st truly Dominican gold medal (and take the money)? After all, cheating and steeling is a Dominican birthright.

@ Roy stone is not a question is a right that a country is given like Israel or UK to any born of his citizen but especially Israel .. Any born israel by low has to represent Israel before any other nation , regardless in what country he or she was born ... And other thing DR is a poor country yes but I want you to watch the 400 meter plane tomorrow and you will find your answer.

josearias,

Please explain, how can anyone that is Israeli by birth, be born in another country? Did you really mean born of Israeli parents?

In my humble opinion, if someone adopts the citizenship of another country (to gain more benefits than just legal residency) then they should represent their adopted country.

Although I am of British descent, unfortunately I cannot trace my ancestry back to transportation to Australia. Those who can consider it a matter of pride, not shame. Many of these "convicts" were ordinary honest working folk, thrown into desperate circumstances by the unemployment in Britain resulting from the Industrial Revolution. By comparison, I suspect the much greater proportion of Dominican criminals are motivated by sheer greed and laziness. Yes?

Pistorius being allowed to run is a perfect example of Political Correctness run amok.

Here we have a person of mediocre athletic ability competing at the Olympic level with the assistance of technology.

And if you are going to allow Handicapped people to compete in the Olympics then why do we still have the Para-Olympics?

Written by: RoyStone, 5 Aug 2012 8:52 AM
From: Australia
Understood, josearias,
Success at the Olympics is a combination of "nature and nurture" - DNA and environment. Arguably an American born citizen, of Dominican parents has Dominican DNA, but his environment (training, motivation, diet, etc.) is American. This then begs the question - "to which country should we attribute his success?". Surely it should be divided between the two? And in what ratio?

This highlights a fundamental difference between Dominicans and Australians. Dominicans are defined by what their parents are, regardless of citizenship or where they are born. Australians consider anyone who adopts Australian citizenship (and all that implies) as Australian, regardless of who their parents are or what country they were actually born in. Don't you think that's better?

In my view, Pistorius is a sensational athlete - definitely not mediocre. According to the officials, he does not have an unfair advantage from technology. Even if he does, he is a wonderful role-model for amputees to look up to and be inspired and motivated. In this instance, this "politically-correct" decision was also a morally correct one too, and going by the interest he has created, probably commercially correct too. Win, lose or draw, he's a hero.

AC,

You hit it out of the park. So sad to see so many people get caught up in a wonderful story THAT BELONGS IN THE PARA-Olympics, as you correctly point out.

Few if any sane person is doubting the wonderful story of South Africa's Oscar Pistorius; the point is that his accomplishments are within the scope of the Para-Olympics, and NOT the regular Olympics where technologies come into play during the conditioning stages leading to the events, shoe wear and sports-wear, in genera are available to all!, etc.

It's a World PC moment. Perhaps next up are some fish fins to help Pistorious compete in Olympic swimming? And why stop there, how about bionic arm(s) for someone lacking one or two such extremities? Might help them compete in boxing? Where does it stop?

what else is new? you are speaking about an American media outlet. the entire Olympics will be a 2 week commercial about the greatness of America. in the runup to the women´s 100 meters race, Dan Obrien was asked who he thought would win the race. he said that it would be one of the three America runners, even though the Jamaican girl, Shelly Ann Fraser, was the defending champion, and had run the fastest time in the world this year. he did not even mention her name. when Shelly Ann won, they interviewed the American that got the silver. it is nothing new. it is part of American zeitgeist. only American are important. besides, it is their tv station.

Commercial television is about promoting the advertised products to the target audience. That means showing what they want so they will also watch the advertisements. It is not about providing an accurate, balanced coverage of the Olympics. If you don't want to see the Olympics from am American perspective, don't watch American commercial television.

I am sure you are happy that Jaimaca is in 2nd place in the world (behind another British Commonwealth country - Australia's kid brother, New Zealand) based on gold medals per million population, with 0.6922
It is also 4th with 1.384 total medals per million population, ahead of Australia in 5th place with 0.9083
When weighting gold=4, silver=2 and bronze=1, then Jamaica is again in 2nd place with 3.8073 and Australia 6th with 1.5898
Congratulations!

Electricity and Lightbulb - History

Thomas Edison's greatest challenge was the development of a practical incandescent, electric light. Contrary to popular belief, he didn't "invent" the lightbulb, but rather he improved upon a 50-year-old idea. In 1879, using lower current electricity, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe, he was able to produce a reliable, long-lasting source of light. The idea of electric lighting was not new, and a number of people had worked on, and even developed forms of electric lighting.
