SANTO DOMINGO. – Dominican Republic’s Monday blues became gold and silver, when Felix “Super” Sanchez became not only the first Dominican to ever win an Olympic gold medal, but now a second after taking first in the 400 meter hurdles at 47.63 in the 2012 London Games.

Luguelin Santos, 18, also beat the odds for the silver medal, in the same track and even the same lane in which Sanchez had ran just 45 minutes earlier.

In the two previous heats Sanchez had also won first place with personal best Saturday, with 47.76, his fastestnsince the 2004 Athens Olympics where he won his first gold medal.

It's a good thing I'm not into betting. I would have bet $100 on Santos, before betting the same on Sanchez. But Sanchez did look in very good form throughout. Santos is 18 and should be in excellent shape come Rio 2016. Let's see more quality runners from DR make it for Rio!!

Congrads to DR - they have so much potential in DR for sports - get more american coaches involved like they do in basketball and spend some of that money the politicos steal on the youth of the DR - My niece is on the National Softball Team and I see nothing but upside for the country - I would love to see them introduce Lacrosse down there - I think they could excel.
Congrads again DR - great job

In an effort to please the suspicious racist xenophobe here is my two cents of opinion:

Both these men are true Patriots; in spite of the Government’s National Negligence to EDUCATION and Sports they triumphed on their own for their country (adopted in Mr. Sanchez). Imagine how many other brothers and sisters are wasting their undeveloped talents because of the lack of opportunities our corrupt government denies them.

First of all Mr. Sanchez had a great personal achievement but he was born and raised the US! We are lucky he decided to share his win with DR.

“Sánchez was born in New York City to Dominican parents and was raised in San Diego, California. He attended University City High School and San Diego Mesa College in the city, and then went on to study psychology at the University of Southern California in 1998. Competing for University of Southern California's USC Trojans, he was a Pac-10 champion (400 m hurdles) and All-American relay champion (1600 m) in 1999.”

From: United States, Fighting the Dictatorship of the Narco PLD Mafia; Guillermo Moreno President 2016

Mr. Santos is even more remarkable given his total lack of opportunity in DR and extreme poverty:

“Luguelín Santos (born 12 November 1993) is a Dominican sprinter.

“He and his siblings were raised by a single mother without any help from his father. He used to run without running shoes, for a long time barefoot. At his 16 he said: “Most of the times one goes to sleep without having dinner and one goes out to practice without having eaten. Sometimes in school, because I also wanted to be a good student, one goes without eating any breakfast. When in school, I remained in the classroom during the breaks because unlike the "kids with family" I did not have anything to eat, but it was OK, I used the time to do homework.”

continued:

Written by: josean, 7 Aug 2012 8:07 AM
From: United States, Fighting the Dictatorship of the Narco PLD Mafia; Guillermo Moreno President 2016

“About his house and neighborhood he said "When it rains one is afraid that the ceiling will crumble because of the wind, and the house gets wet as it is full of leaks. Because this is a dangerous neighborhood, when one hears something out the window you stay quiet, whether they sneak in or not." Later he added.”

"When it is raining, one needs to add plastic bags from his feet to his ankles, inside most of the houses in our neighborhood"

Santos was basically raised most of his life under PLD's Narco misadministration of the country and in spite of that social neglect he was able to succeed so both he and his mother for that reason alone deserve a GOLD MEDAL!

Congrats to Felix. This is a hell of an accomplishment. But I hope in the future DR's athletes will have some better looking uniforms. The current uniforms are quite garish, if not downright "gay" looking.
P.S. Congratulations are also in order to our neighbors for getting the bronze medal.

I guess some that call themselves 'Dominican", but they are not, because they can't even applaud a sports figure that won gold under the Dominican flag, and are always searching for dissent and trying to inject politics into a national olympic feat, that should be applauded, by strangers as well as Dominicans.
To those persons that are critical, and can not even applaud excellent apolitical performance, then I would suggest you leave this site, and never return, because buddy, you are in the wrong place.

Hopefully these successes will generate enough stimulus to force through some necessary changes in the way athletes are trained and provided for in DR. Many of the small islands of the Caribbean have used the USA as a spring board to Olympic success. The guy that beat Santos goes to the University of Alabama on scholarship. Unfortunately for many Dominicans, the education needed to successfully gain admission to USA universities are very slim as these demand competency in English language, as a prerequisite for admission. So the way forward would be to pay for trainers and staff to come to DR and slowly build up a native based quality staff with modern training facilities located in two urban areas, say SD and Santiago, to start.

It would also be very beneficial to integrate a National Sports competitive culture like those in the USA where Middle School youngsters and HS level candidates compete for athletic honors once a year. The best talent going on to fill

the National Team development squad.

Jamaica has a similar program at I believe the HS level.

There are many talented runners and other potential athletes that go begging for opportunities in the DR. Even more so in Haiti. Our mega millionaire Baseball players should help out by providing some seed money, via scholarship support, to promising youngsters or at least financial support for professional staffing development in DR.

With a well targeted development scheme, DR could very well introduce to the world in Rio 2016 a far better balanced and competitive Team DR to represent the country.

Dream on buddy, dream on. The sports authorities in the DR are lost outside their little small town mentality. They applaud, cheer, and take photos with the athletes, to gain attention, but the sad part is that they have reached their level of incompetency in their post, (Peter Principle).
The person you mentioned, from Grenada that won the gold, not only he is a naturally gifted athlete, but also has a scholarship in the US, and trains with a coach that himself has won a track and field olympic medal.
If our "dumb and dumber" political sports authorities, and the lazy and inept royalty figures at the Olympic committee, start hustling for scholarships abroad for our promising sports youngsters, then a lot could be accomplished.

congrats are in order, for both Felix, and Santos. then again, the old Dread called it right. i posted yesterday that Felix is running better now than he ever was. that is borne out by the fact that his time was exactly the same as the first medal. i wish Santos would have won, but, at 18, he has a lot of good days ahead. the guy from Grenada is pure talent, and a beautiful sportsman. congrats, all around. i feel so good for Felix. it just shows that you are only beaten when you say you are. so many people wrote him off as being washed up, and done.

I don't know how much credit the Dominican Republic can take for Sanchez's win. He is an American citizen, born and raised in USA. He did it for his late grandmother who brought him up, not for the country of his ancestors. He was rejected by the American Olympic team selectors, since despite his obvious brilliance, was inconsistent, having failed to perform after learning of the death of his grandmother. Clearly his motivation was not money, which makes his victory more laudable.

Roystone,

Felix WAS THE defending Olympic champion in 2008 when his grandmother passed away!

"If Sanchez's victory doesn't turn out to be the most unlikely gold-medal-winning effort of this week's track and field competition, it certainly will be near the top of that list. He won two world championships, an Olympic gold medal and 43 races in a row from 2001 to 2004, but he hadn't been in nearly as good form recently and appeared to be a few years past his prime."

My point Roy is that this is a great achievement for the men as athletes and a proud moment for Dominicans Everywhere.

However, their achievements are even more notable because the Dominican Government did not do ANYTHING to assist them.

Their Glory and that of the Dominican People should not be usurped by Filthy Greedy Politicians that would not ordinarly give these guys the Time of Day but for the fact they can now bask in THEIR glory, for which they did not contribute even a nanoparticle.
