Cuba envoy points to Dominican Air Force officer in player defections

Santo Domingo.- Cuban ambassador Carlos De la Nuez on Wednesdaysaid Dominican Air Force officer William Solis took part in the plot where the brothersYulieski and Lourdes Jr. Gourriel abandoned the Cuban baseball team which playedin the Caribbean Series.

He said the transaction was caught on tape which the Cuban delegationhanded to the National District Office of the Prosecutor when the complaint wasfiled.

Interviewed by Listin Diario, the Cuban envoy said thevideo shows the Dominican officer at the hotel where the team was lodged tocontact the brothers who then accompanied him to his car whose whereabouts isunknown.

He said Solis was in the hotel on more than one occasionwhile the Cuban team was in the country. He said the officer entered the hotelwith armed guards in an intimidating manner, as stated by members of the Cubandelegation.

"That is in the video … that’s in the complaint,that they were in the vehicle with the officer," the diplomat said.

After condemning the incident the diplomat said there hasn’tbeen a response from the Dominican government, adding that Havana has the rightto file a complaint.
