Almost 7 million Dominican s use fixed, cell phones

SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic is closing in on Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina in the number of Web use per 100 inhabitants, with 6.3 for each account, said Dominican Telecom Institute (Indotel) president Jose Rafael Vargas, citing an International Telecoms Union (UIT) report.

Vargas said Jamaica tops the ITU figures, measured as Internet penetration at 17.6 users per account, while Costa Rica has 11.3 per account.

He said if these parameters were to be considered Dominican Republic wouild dispute Jamaica for first place in Internet penetration in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The ITU report found that for each 100 inhabitants in Latin America and Caribbean countries, Jamaica topped the list in 2007, followed by Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela and Dominican Republic.

Vargas said the country posted impressive growth in the number of Internet accounts in the last nine years, from 52,761 in 2000 to almost 300,000 in May this year.

This man is a great leader at a good company. He has a vision that the RD Gov does not. Poor kids are having fun learning computer skills and with some english the RD can become a greater job market for telemarketing jobs in various industry's such as credit card agents etc.

Conversely, the RD Gov is clueless and allows the underworld drug market to move drugs, create addictions in slums to undermine future of the youth. Tigres grow more powerful and control the streets (not the police) and kill reporters.

It is good to see that someone in a RD leadership position has a clue!

I don't see how the DR is doing so well despite chronic power outages .. on a daily basis the DR electric power grid can be blacked out for up to 8 hours per day. They need to be measuring hours connected to the Internet rather than "number of Web use per 100 inhabitants" or the number of "Internet accounts".

Although you bring up a good issue; "energy crisis' but it is a separate issue. Unfortunately, the RD Gov is too shortsighted to deal with key issues. There's a "habitual" failure to do what is right or strategic...

The cost & reliability of energy can be improve very easily (as Brazil has proven). The RD should improve security issues, build infrastructure of a Nuclear Powered Network with upgraded transmilssions & distributions underground with fiber optics to have a state-of-the-art system. Secondarily, minimize dependence on old buses using foreign oil via improving infrastructure with state of the art National Rail System (electric) to connect all major cities and ports (POP, STI, LaVega, SDQ, LRM and PUJ etc). This system moves people from city to city and within cities as well as good faster & cheaper to import/export markets. Low energy costs makes the RD globally competitive to attract jobs & exports.

All can be wired even in the campos via wireless.. Simple!

No matter what catagory one fits in this is undeniably, great progress.
Thanks to Indotel /Codetel there are internet centers popping up all over the place. The one I see everyday, located in the Parque Mirador, is always full of people from 6 to 60.

There are free Wifi Hotspots all over and AILA is one of the few airports that offers free access.
Computers have become more affordable as well.

As far as power well even a small invertor with 2 batteries will run a PC and a fan until the lights come back. This is just a part of life in the DR and probably will be for some time to come.

i agree with Jander, regarding the proliferation of internet and call centers. also , computer hardware in the DR is very attractively priced. one can buy a decent computer in this country for prices almost equivalent to those in the USA . now if only the computers get put to worthwhile uses: i see far too many adolescents in internet centers using the machines for entertainment purposes: downloading reggaeton and rap, chat rooms, and the occasional porn. but the tools are available, and it is up to the users to make the most advantageous use of them.

Kids will be kids .. they use the Internet as a gaming portal .. keeping up with boyfriends and girlfriends via email .. it may seem a waste of time but "worthwhile" to that age group .. who said the Internet must be reserved for work only? I mean what makes me or you posting on this BLOG any more "worthwhile" than what the kids do playing games online? I would rather see them do that than end up in a plastic bag in Bani.

most assuredly, Ghoulish. i am just saying that if you have to pay for the service, such as you have to at an internet cafe, you might want to make it a worthwhile investment. then again, maintaining contact with peers and downloading the latest ear splitting reggaeton is probably worthwhile activity when you are 17 years old. i just don't remember that far back!

The purpose of a computer is to do work of some sort -- to produce and to be creative. The entertaiment part of it is secondary, it is to be used while on a break from the work. In other words the used of computer is to make MONEY but we had taken it to do whatever we like which is fine but don't run away saying what it was no designed for. The internet is a portal that brings people and business much closer as well as people in general for the sharing of informations and other things. For D.R. they are working to make this a reality in all phases of life and business and so far they are doing a great job.

What most people are using the internet for in the DR? Work, education? or maybe just wasting their time online?
