Santo Domingo.– In the Dominican Republic, a country of 9.5 million inhabitants, there are almost the same amount of telephone numbers in use, said Dominican Telecomm Institute (Indotel) director Jose Rafael Vargas.

According to Vargas, the Dominican Republic is ending 2009 with a teledensity of 97%, and is expected to reach 100% in February 2010.

Indotel statistics show there are 963,265 fixed lines (9.9%) and 8,449,283 mobile phones in use (86.7%), which adds up to 9,412,548 (96.6%) lines in a country with a population estimated at 9,742,374 inhabitants.

"Even though we are far from being a society of knowledge, at least we have reached telephone teledensity and we are moving forward on wide access to the Internet," Vargas pointed out.

gmiller261 ...everyone chats away on their cells here even when driving and walking ..it drives me crazy and of course every time they buy a new recharge ticket they pay a huge swag of tax ..the population figure is interesting ..there must be about 6 million people living in the capital now which is a huge increase

Ricardolito 6 million people living in the capital so what your saying is that more then half of the population lives in the capital? I thought the capital had a population of 2.5 million but i might be wrong.

No money to paid the electric bill, but I can''t be caught without the latest I phone or blackberry. a friend of mine went to SD from NY with a Razer a few years ago, he thought he was going to rock with his state of the art mobile down there... much to his surprised his telephone was considered obsoleted.

Althought, the cellphone has become a necessity and not a luxury, but Dominicans seek how to make it a luxury anyways. LOL

Call charges are a rip off - three times those in other countries. Government would make much more money if it nationalized the phone companies.

My sarcasm missed the point.

I was relating that to the electrical debacle.

I am sure they will buy their phone cards before they pay for electricity.

deicibao yes it was a big surprise but for a long time there has been more than half the population living in the capital .I know la Romana has about 250,000 Santiago about 600,000 and say Puerta Plata, San Pedro and San Francisco each have about 150,000 so it is easy to imagine that the capital and the near by towns have more than 6 million ..quite scary . I do not go to the south often but I know the area in the east of SD is growing at a huge rate

ricardolito your wrong about something Santiago has a population of nearly one million and i still don't believe that their population is 6 million, all sources indicate that their population is maybe close to 3 million. Also, the Cibao region has always been the most populus region and the total polation of the cibao is 5 million so it's imposible that the capital has 6 million people being that the total population of the country is less then 10 million.

So La capital has 6 million people no way? Then again, when you drive and drive and drive and drive through some of those never ending barrios and pueblos it does make sense. That's a lot of people. I hope an earthquake never hit's cause a lot of those homes are not seismis proof no senor...El Diablo...
