Santo Domingo.- Dominicans will have the chance of switching phone companies without the need for changing their number through the portability of numbers, which starts 30 September and will give customers the right to maintain their phone numbers.

In order to complete the transfer, users only have to pay a one-time fee of RD$80 pesos each time they changed service providers.

The head of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL), Jose Rafael Vargas, noted that after filling out a request form for number portability and showing the corresponding documentation, there comes an easy process for there is no limit on how many times a person can change telephone companies.

According to Vargas, this step is the most important conquest in favor of the users of the national telephone system because "it will bring about better prices, and better quality of service for the customer." He also asked telephone companies to emphasize quality as a way to retain their customers, and compete in a fair manner, "because if they don't, Indotel will be their judge."

Great!! How about setting up the phones, so that one can make a phone call to some one with a different provider,.........Here is the problem, Orange can only call orange, tricom can only call tricom.

Roberto I think you can ring a different carrier from your cell phone service provider but the charges are higher to do so. I have a claro number and when I visit once a month I do ring my friend and he has a cell provided by orange.
I do find it appalling that the Service Providers (Orange, Claro, Tricom etc in the DR have denied the Dominican people this basic network feature, Even Haiti switched that feature on 2 years ago. Pure greed by the Operators and complicity by the regulator (corruption) have enabled the Service providers to reap additional profits at the detriment of the Dominican people.

the way the system is fixed gives those companies a good leverage on price fixing and higher fares for their services. If the government does not deregulate the market, the people will always get ripped off, because the prices will never go down.

Not sure this is winnable situation for public, unless barriers are broken via legislation.

You can't really effectively boycott, since prices are fixed and most people need their phones.

Best time to break cycle might be during up-coming election year and forcing candidates to take clear position on issue.

Boycotting won't work: they will lower the prices then, raise them back after a few weeks. The best thing is to wait for the elections and ask the incumbent and the new candidates what they think about the situation, and if the answer is not what you'd expect from them, you just scratch them out of your voting liste.
Until the people understand what's the importance of a vote, they will still be fooled by their financial and political eltie. Once again, if the government does not deregulate the market, the prices won't go down.

tricom works good in the urban areas and has good plans. Claro has the best coverage in the campos but orange gives you more minutes per peso
