Santo Domingo.– Orange Dominicana, the Dominican Republic’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, has launched the country’s first GSM network powered entirely by solar energy, according to BNamericas.

The country’s telecoms regulator Indotel announced the development, and the new infrastructure will cover the Santo Domingo-Samana region, as well as the Cruz Verde district.

Orange claims that the new solar-powered base stations are ten times more efficient than traditional electric-powered cell sites, adding that the new units offer zero carbon dioxide emissions and zero noise.

The launch comes after Orange began work on the project earlier this year as part of parent company France Telecom’s global environment protection project, Oryx; in the first phase Orange plans to build 30 base stations.

Great news ! Now all we need is electrical power in homes and businesses so that we can charge our cel phones in order to be able to use the solar powered GSM network.

Blackout problem? Get your own power station. Lot's of choices- wind, solar, Fuel Cell. Get hot on it and quit whining. Looks like Orange Dominica could show you the way.

Great idea bruce?

now a little reality for those folks on the island that make 25krd or much less a month and can't afford to put in their own power station, and go off grid, Put the metro money, and some of the other public works money, the bloated payrolls of the EDEE's into the infrastructure, and education, so the country can progress.

What Orange needs to do is stop the nonsense and finally upgrade it's network. Last time I checked, Orange Still does not have 3G in DR meanwhile Claro has had 3G/HSDPA and even VIDEO CALLING since November 2007 which I was able to confirm when I was in DR July 2007 when I got a 3G signal at SDQ with my AT&T Sim card in my old AT&T 8525.

Stop making negative comments and see the positive aspect of it. We are making progress here in DR and will continue to progress even though we have so many haters!

It's not about making negative comments ojeda. Orange is a huge telecommuncations corporation and one of the leaders in France and the U.K. in Wireless Subscribers. This is about doing right by the subscribers that pump millions of pesos every year. I'm glad they are running a green infrastructure but the fact that we're in 2009 and they are still only using EDGE while Claro which has been in DR half the time Orange has already has 3G and has surpassed Orange. Technology matters and the fact is that you're jumping to conclusions without analyzing the situation. Orange had DR under control and they let it slip by becoming complacent. I'm Dominican myself, born and raised so for you to call me a hater for telling the truth is laughable. Read the facts, Orange is making way too much money off of DR without investing much back into the system.

The fact that you are Dominican born and raised does not make u a non hater! I know many Dominicans born and raised that are haters. But you have a point, thank you for further explaining this issue to me which was not very clear to me.

So many problems in the DR. The least is the cell phone. How about income so people can pay their bills to the companies that provide services. I have friends in BIG AMERICAN companies that make sqat for pay. This country will never get ahead as long as their pay is VERY loooow.
