Santo Domingo.– Orange Dominicana, the Dominican Republic’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, has launched the country’s first GSM network powered entirely by solar energy, according to BNamericas.
The country’s telecoms regulator Indotel announced the development, and the new infrastructure will cover the Santo Domingo-Samana region, as well as the Cruz Verde district.
Orange claims that the new solar-powered base stations are ten times more efficient than traditional electric-powered cell sites, adding that the new units offer zero carbon dioxide emissions and zero noise.
The launch comes after Orange began work on the project earlier this year as part of parent company France Telecom’s global environment protection project, Oryx; in the first phase Orange plans to build 30 base stations.

now a little reality for those folks on the island that make 25krd or much less a month and can't afford to put in their own power station, and go off grid, Put the metro money, and some of the other public works money, the bloated payrolls of the EDEE's into the infrastructure, and education, so the country can progress.
you are lucky if you make 25kRD in DR
