Corral de Los Indios in the Dominican Republican has a lot in common with Stonehenge in England, the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland and the medicine wheels of the American West. All locations share the universal creation of circular stone ceremonial and astronomical sites

LOS ANGELES, (Catholic Online).- The Corral de Los Indios is one of the few pre-Columbian monuments that exist in the Dominican Republic. Located roughly 5 kilometers north of the City of San Juan de la Maguana, the formation is located in the center of the island of Santo Domingo. It is among the most important pre-Columbian monuments of the Antilles.

The corral is composed of a circular clearing some 235 meters diameter, with a 1.50 meter long gray stone with a face carved on one end in the center. Research on the site is spotty. It's reputed that the site originally had two rows of black stones forming two concentric circles around the center which were destroyed by an irrigation district manager or builder, for the hydraulic works in the Canal Juan de Herrera.

The site suffered further damages in 1918 when Americans during their invasion of the country laid the center stone upright. Between the years of 1960 and 1965, restoration work was done by Emil Moya Boyra, returning the center stone to its original condition where it remains today.

It is believed the site was a ceremonial place for the chieftains of the Taino Indians, Caonabo and Anacaona as well as an astronomical instrument. It is said that from the center rock astronomical phenomena could be observed and lined up with the outer rings of rock with great precision.

2,300-Year-old Maya ruins destroyed for pastureland

Published December 03, 2010

Mexico City – An ancient Mayan residential complex some 2,300 years old was destroyed by heavy machinery in the southeastern Mexican state of Yucutan to clear the land for pasture on a private ranch, officials told Efe.

According to experts at the National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, the Maya site near the town of Chicxulub dates to the 300 B.C. Preclassical Period and is registered as No. 15 in the Yucutan archaeological catalog.

"The presence of remains were previously known in the area and for that reason INAH will act quickly," the communications chief of the public institute, Julio Castrejon, said.

What the heck is the island of Santo Domingo?

We should feel glad DT is leading the way for news sources to start using the proper name of the island. Santo Domingo is the name of the island while Distrito Nacional is the name of the capital. Many people are still confuse about this but I'm glad DT is clearing things up but more work needs to be done on their part.

We as Dominican need to stop this non-sense.

There is only ONE NAME for the island and is officially called "ISLAND OF SANTO DOMINGO" everything else is a nick-name nothing we should care about.

Yes, but times have changed and that name is not used anymore. In modern times the island is refered to as hispanola even on all of the modern maps.

What is funny is when a Dominican in USA says "voy pa Santo Domingo" but in fact they are staying in another town like Santiago or Puerto Plata and have no plans of entering la capital lol

You are the only person confuse here.

- 1st. - the name of the island according to the Dominican constitution is : Isla de Santo Domingo
- 2nd - the name of the 1 of the countries inside the island is : Republica Dominicana
- 3rd - the name of the Capital of DR is : Distritto Nacional
- 4th - There is no city named Santo Domingo, is Called Santo Domingo de Guzman inside of Santo Domingo este which is NOT the capital.

Read the Dominican constitution before calling anybody idiota.

Even if the name of Haiti stir a lot of debates but I never heard about the Island of SANTO DOMINGO . In Haiti at present time we Call Santo Domingo or Saint Domingue to designate the other side of the Island . I do record that at this period of time the side of Haiti were called Saint Domingue at the time of French colonization when emancipated slave were called the " affranchi of Saint Domingue" . Most free people of color were mulattoes, or of mixed race.

You are wrong!

Before all that history you are talking about the island had 3 names ayiti, kiskeya or bohio. In Haiti they have try hard to act as if the other names didn't exist to fulfill the purpose of calling the island Haiti which is also the name of the Republic of Haiti.

History is not on your side and I can't allow a lie to become a truth. no no!

The island name was and is Santo Domingo way before Haiti's present citizen even knew the island existed. Haiti's present citizens have no or minimal connection to those who called Ayti, Kiskeya or Bohio.

We can be good neighbors but respect for other people's land must never be forgotten.

Belly is correct ,the island was GIVEN the name Santo Domingo and the French even used the French version Saint Domingue as their designation. The Island was later named la Española.

Now if we go to the native names as Belly cleary states then Kiskeya,Bohio AND Haiti were the names they used although many would argue that since Haiti means (High Land ;Tierra Alta) it was only a part of the island instead of the whole island.

Todays Haitians are descended in almost their totality from people who came (were brought )from West Africa in the late 1700´s to the 1800´s and as such have no real connection with names of people who predated them!

Pepe32,

Correct. But the historical record is written by those who win and the African descendants of all those slaves brought over by the French, with the Great aid of the Mosquitoes, defeated the French and established their dominion over the western portion of the island-not even a 1/3 of the landmass yet. These ex-Slaves extended their reach to include our side, in so doing they took Hinche and other lands that belonged to our side.

So, having achieved their independence before we did, the African descendants used the critical advantages of being first to call themselves and proclaim unto the World of Nations a New Nation led by Blacks: The Republic of Haiti. At that moment in time, we the original descendants of the Western expansion into the islands of the Caribbean were "neutered" historically speaking. For instead of our proclamation unto the world, the Africans and their descendants gained the attention and ultimately the prize to claim ownership in the name

Haiti, that as you say was never part of their Real history; but a mere fabrication or mystification of their history. But again, selective memory and creating an historical narrative suited to ones people's advantage is the case the world over. So in that regard the Africans who would call themselves "Haitians" were practicing a very tried and true form of national narrative. Unfortunately, they beat us to the punch, and made things worse for our own narrative by invading and causing even greater problems for us by usurping many critical aspects of an aspiring national development. All these developments, the 20 years struggle, and assorted invasions attempts moved us closer but caused great hardship in developing our national aspirations.

You are excessively preoccupy with people of WEST AFRICA.

""Todays Haitians are descended in almost their totality from people who came (were brought )from West Africa in the late 1700´s to the 1800´s and as such have no real connection with names of people who predated them!"

If you claim to be descendent from Europeans and calling people "darkies" on the site , you don't have any real connections with the name neither

Ayti,Quisqueya,Boyo are the name of the Island.
Written by: Atabey, 5 Dec 2010 12:17 PM

And this "ownership" is so great that many people the world over know far more about Haiti than they do about the Dominican Republic. For many people DR has only recently become "Independent" in identity. That's one of the reasons why Haiti has so many people siding with her and why we, the Dominicans are often on the "wrong side" when we try to defend our national aspirations. In fact, I've heard many people state, "why don't you two sides join together" as if they would contemplate the same for their own nation! But such is the power of historical narrative that outside those who actually read and digest the material adequately, few view the intersections of history with clear understandings. and in this hectic world of 24/7 news cycles and bombardments left and right, who's to say that they are not jaded by so many conflicting information? But we know better, even if the bleeding hearts keep the real history at bay.

You know Ayti for once you are correct since none of my bloodline comes from this island ,neither does yours but MANY Dominicans do have in their bloodline Taino blood who are the legitimate owners of this island.

So as two people from distant continents you and I are relative newcomers to this island with the main difference that many of my compatriots can trace their lineage to the 1400's and beyond while all of todays so called Haitians where in West Africa not to long ago and in many ways have not ceased to be West Africans while on the green side of the island a new people have been formed from three distinct groups.
