Santo Domingo.– Nearly 2.9 million Dominicans, 28% of the total population, have Internet access, 15 years after the service was first introduced in the country, according to the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL).

"Internet is developing quickly in the Dominican Republic, with a growth rate of between 67% and 85% from year to year," Indotel director Jose Rafael Vargas stated.

According to Vargas, the 28% figure does not take into account the over 1,000 Internet centers around the country.

And 28% of this country...own this country. Not a chance at $100 to $200 a month in wages, you can afford internet access at $40 to $60 a month. I do not see that changing soon.

The thing that infuriates me here is the lack of investment. We pay very high prices for the internet here, but the system just doesn't improve. In the (Y)UK speeds doubled each year. We renewed our contracts annually & got twice the speed for the same price, as a rule.
We've had our account here 3 years now & still have the same slow expensive connection :-/
The weather's great though :-)
