SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic ranks 136th among 152 countries in Internet speed, a study by the company NET INDEX and proprietors of the measurer www.speedtest.com shows.

It gauged Dominican Republic’s constant download speed at 0.80 megabytes per second (mbps), with Santiago, the second largest city, posting the quickest velocity in the tests with 0.80 Mbps, whereas the capital Santo Domingo was measured at 0.76 mbps.

As to the country’s other major cities, San Pedro came in at 0.70; La Vega with 0.67; La Romana at 0.52 and Puerto Plata the slowest with 0.48.

The list is headed by South Korea with 34.10 Mbps, Latvia with 24.44 Mbps and Moldova Republic with 21.76 Mbps.

Net Index began measuring country speeds from April 17 to May  27 and has only validated the data of those nations which have more than 100,000 consultations  on speed of unique IP addresses and whose users are within a distance of 300 kilometers from the server.

Slow and expensive

In addition to lack of speed, Dominican Republic also has an expensive Web service, according to an expert who requested anonymity.  “Take the case of Spain where service for 1K (1.0 mbps) costs around 20 euros, but here (DR) you have to pay 2,500 pesos (around 25 euros) for that same speed.”

They added that instead of becoming cheaper given better technology and improved infrastructure, the telecoms increasingly charge more for the service.

Not only the internet speed is not as advertised but it is the most expensive, with the added state tax of 28% on top of the inflated charge.
Some legislators have tried to get the government to repeal that anti-education tax, but the predatory
state tax collectors have opposed the measure.

Actually our internet speed ranking is no so bad.

It's a heck of a lot better than our primary education ranking. I believe that the tax rate on the internet is 28%. Highest in the world.

The tax rate is not Slim's fault. The fact that it is so slow, along with the lousy service we get on Claro IS HIS FAULT.

Slims has a monopoly in DR?

If so:

LF and the DR need to threaten Slim's operation with outside competitors. Either he improves time and services or other companies come in and make his investments lose value.

Ever since Carlos Slim and the Mexican'ts have take over, Codetel service has spiraled downhill in a
exponential way. Impossible to get any credit reversals or any concessions whatsoever for nonexistent or bad service.

It really is pathetic that I have G3 service and the speed at my local bar with 7 computers feeding off in is faster than my portible device. I can be next to a tower and the speed is pathetic.

And when you go to Claro...you get the same thing as when you by a cone of slop at Bon Ice Creme...they look at you like they don't give a shit. Dominicans themselves have a long way to go in the service industry. This ain't the 10 y 20 colmado world anymore...well at least on the surface we appear to be headed in the right direction....but appearances can be decieving.

cibaeno, slim is going to do just what the hotel guys did to Puerto Plata. build it cheap and shitty, milk it for all it¨s worth, and bugger off when a better opportunity comes along. that is the difference between the caribbean islands which have good service, and here. their services are locally owned, so they have a vested interest in upgrading and modernising. slim has a monopoly, and could not care less what dominicans think, since they cannot make a simple phone call and sign up another provider.

Well hopefully LIME can get their fiberoptic cable in quicker to bring some competition into this monopoly. It's suppose to be in by 2011 from what I read and is suppose to cover from Jamaica to DR and double it's capacity. Maybe this will bring the price down soon. Hopefully TasaCero gain some ground to eliminate taxes on internet since is way out of control.

Every time that rains in Bavaro, we are experiencing bad Internet connections.
Specially with Tricom Wimax antennas, price is 40 dollars per month.
Codetel and Claro has better wire connection, price is similar.

Few things that we are missing in Bavaro:
- Codetal and Claro office (closest one is in Veron).
- Tricom Office (not distribution office as in Plaza Mayoral, but real Tricom office).

Codetel installation service is super, and it is easy to open an account (now with Internet, home phone and cable TV).

Tricom installation with WIMAX is instantly, same day, and will work good for the first month, then Tricom operators will call you to ask how is the service (this usually happens when service is good). If the service is not good, and you have to call Tricom, smart operator will tell you that they will send somebody to fix the problem. They never do, as there is not a support service for Tricom in Bavaro.
Codetel support is great.
If you have bed reception signal with WIMAX antenna (TRICOM), their distribution office will offer you External antenna for 6000 pesos. Same antenna you can buy on ebay for 1500 pesos.
Two years ago they were giving this antennas for free..

what bewilders me is how in God's name, in the year 2010, a government can allow foreigners to be in charge of their only internet service. this is the post modern, information age. communications is everything. you live and die by it, in terms of business, commerce, banking, trade. it is far too sensitive an entity to turn over to foreigners. as it stands, slim is providing horrible service at pickpocket prices. he is laughing all the way to the bank, and dominicans are waiting for an hour to download the latest antony santos ballad.

Remember your blood pressure dread we all do not want to attend an internet wake for you .....Again ..........Yes I was skeptical when Claro took over and expected rapid deterioration of services .....after further analysis I find this not necessarily true although speed leaves a lot to be desired .I would imagine that Verizon would be the subject of Yanqi Imperialism talk and CIA rumors and a return to Government ownership would be a true disaster........20 thousand more employees and 50 percent less service as usual .....I am still optamistic and glad that a large multinational company from our neighbor Mexico (Tacobell} is in charge ....and.........Not some of the small time hustlers that own phone companies in other parts of the Caribbean ie. the hustlers to whom he refers are his nemesis groups, black businessmen. they have managed to do what " our neighbor " has not done. you have showed no logical reason for optimism in this matter, because slim is not celebrated for his business methods.so, stay with dial up speed bandwidth. This is just another area that shows how denied Dominicans are of some of the most basic services that helps a nation evolve in better developed society. You can add slow, over-priced Internet service right behind 1) non-continues and unreliable electric service, 2) non-continues and unreliable water service, 3) backwards educations services, etc…

Slim is not the only business owner to blame for keeping Dominican Republic backwards in the Internet age, Viva, Tricom, and Orage, all profit from delivering subpar services, at an inflated price and in an inconsistent manner. Take for instance Viva, they sell the Interjet service and promise speeds of “up to” 2+ mbps --- now, I understand that it is a shared service, and the gimmick behind the usage of “up to”, however, when you don’t even deliver 25% of the speed promised on a consistent basis you are cheating the consumer!
The biggest culprit is the ALWAYS spineless and corrupt Dominican Government!!!

Dread

Internet speed doesn't work as many people think on any country. Here in USA almost all residential internet connection don't go above 700Kb wich is less than 1 MB in real life test, in fact many modem manufacturers cap it there to comply with the service provider requirements. i.e. According to comcast I have a 15 MB connection at home but downloading using DL(download managers) and my connection constant speed goes above 700KB for 30 minutes it automatically resets the modem to protect from customers doing the same and overloading the network. Just ask your self why does comcast offer 15 MB Download/1 MB upload for US$35.00 and a T1 line with 1.5MB download/ 1.5 MB upload cost US$200 a month. The simple answer is that mobile and home internet are over hyped speed and T1 are real life speed. 100MB or .75 MB means nothing if the cap of the speed is the same locally.

Everything is more expensive in the DR. I tried getting a .DO domain but, did not get it because the price is more than 10 times than a .COM domain.
Written by: Belly, 29 May 2010 7:02 PM

ZonaDominicana

The differences in prices for .DO domain and .COM domain all come down to volume of sales. i.e. How many .DO sale a day and compare that to .COM sales a day and put in perspective it cost the same to become a registrar of .COM and .DO. It has nothing to do with corruption or monopoly the difference is you can become a registrar for .COM and easily sale 10,000 names at $8.95 and cost $30,000 to start and .DO cost the same $30,000 to start but your chances of selling 10 names a day are very slim so of course price has to go up to pay for initial cost and maintenance and add to that the fact they can't host any of the names either for the reason of high cost of internet connection. it all comes down to volumes and having a hot product in hand(.COM) and a cold product (.DO) in hand for sale. even a .COM at $8.95 is way over price since it only cost them around 65 cents to buy it and sale it for $.95
