Santo Domingo. - The Dominican Republic’s Armed Forces expect to receive sophisticated radar equipment today, bought from an Israeli company for use in the war on drug trafficking and other types of organized crime, and will operate from a control center in the San Isidro Airbase.

Armed Forces minister Pedro Rafael Peña, the Presidency’s adviser on narcotics Marino Vinicio Castillo, the chiefs of the Air Force and Navy and other senior military officials will receive the equipment in a ceremony today.

The three-dimensional radar, which can detect any aircraft incursion in the national airspace, was bought in a call for tenders for more than US$34 million in October, from the company Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI).

The equipment is similar to the one installed by the United States in Key West, Florida.

The main concern of regular Dominicans and the Dominican government is drug trafficking.
For illegal immigration the goverment relies on the adolescents of DT for informations

Theoretically, the air drop shipments and see shipments, hopefully, could be detected earlier and minimized...... let's see how DR is fighting the drug trafficking.

But what about the inland shipments? From Haiti, crossing the border or mountains, bribing the border patrol guys.........How to stop this?

riosm;
they are probably already using subs for the purpose of delivering drugs to the DR, Haiti and PR.
Those subs only cost about one million and can carry about ten times that in street value drugs.
Midnight deliveries to the South Coast of all three countries would be the way to go. Just sit on th bottom and wait for the Patrol Boats to pass out of sight, then move close to shore for delivery.

Please make sure it is put together, who know when the dominican military will get to it.

Now leonel can pinpoint his shipment and make sure the goodz get to the person that ordered it. Everyone else losses out.

Leonel the drug dealer and the president that coudn't.

With a salary starting at $4300 pesos a month, I see why its not hard to bribe an officer... its a shame what these people get paid.

TexasBill,

You are absolutely right i was forgetting about those bloody narco subs. I heard there's one that even has stealth like technology ... More patrol boats are needed specially in the southerns waters, and they need to include special radars that can detect boats and narco subs as well. Now the cards have changed, the latest are the subs, what's next...

Increase the salaries of police officers, I even make more then them in a mouth !.. so make it a decent pay.

@riosm you mean , this radar can detect Drug dealer ? , dominican do not need any radar , you just need to go to streets without Radar .

oh man , i live in dominican for one year and i have passed the hardest time of my life with these people , dominican tv , dominican streets , dominican people and ... all remind me 20's of New Ginea .

i remember it was 2009 that and computer exhibition held there , that was amazing , 20 stands were there and 2000 people were drinking bear , all stands were empty ,
Car exhibition , home applicance exhibition .... oh my god , really ridiculous .

I don't know why people over there believe they are center of culture (CULTURARE) , dominican is country for drinking and enjoying girls ,nothing more

The radar if for detecting and tracking drug smuggling aircraft with no flight plans.

The problem is the drug trade in the DR is so deep rooted from top to bottom, the key would be to stop the demand, use and need for drugs, no users no drugs ='s no drug smugglers.

Many argue make drugs legal as a solution to the drug problem.......but you'll still have stiff compatition and the drug related crime.

The way I see it you'll then have the private grower user vs. smuggler drug dealer.

Welcome to the DR the party Island of the Carribean....
