Port-au-Prince.– The American Digital University and the Center for Vocational and Technical Training signed a memorandum of understanding in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, to jointly offer online and distance learning technical courses and certification programs for students from Haiti Tec and throughout Haiti.

The digital university is centered in Sterling, Virginia, and the purpose of the collaboration is to encourage and develop a cooperative relationship between the two institutions including the offering of technical e-learning courses and certification programs as well as the development of special projects that will benefit both institutions and the country.

The partnership will make online course available to the citizens of Haiti at a normal cost to the students. The online courses will be offered in areas like office skills, information technology, nursing and health care and other vocational or employment skills that will lead to certifications.

It's probably the best thing we could do for the Haitians although I think it would be best if our government concentrated on its own people. But once again this is great for the Haitains it's better than donations. Education is something that we all need in Hispaniola.

Maybe I'm not reading it very well. What Dominican Republic has to do with it?

As the Haitians become more educated and self sufficient, they will be less likely to come to DR illegally for work. This is a double edged sword for DR as companies cannot exploit cheap Haitian labor and will have to start hiring more expensive legit labor. More expensive as benefits and taxes have to be paid which will result in price increases.

I agree with the earlier comment DR should do more to educate their own citizens.

I would like to reply to some of the readers' comments: Dominican Republic has nothing to do with this initiative with Haiti-Tec. This Press Release has been sent worldwide, hence it has been published by Dominican Today, too.

I think what has happened is that people have confused another unrelated educational initiatives by the Domnican government as a joint cooperation effort with Haiti and mixed it up the digital university.
