Santo Domingo.- The Predator crewless reconnaissance aircraft was shown to local media for the first time at the San Isidro Airbase Sunday night by National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) president Rolando Rosado, who said the government seeks an agreement with Haiti’s authorities to ensure its operations can cover the entire island and “close the airspace to drug trafficking.”
He said the aircraft’s mission is only reconnaissance and its task will be supported by the Super Tucano intercept planes.
“The Dominican Government is grateful to the U.S. authorities, DEA, Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Embassy of that nation, for their confidence in the country, the tactical importance and the hundreds of millions of dollars involving the operations, which will not cost one cent to the country,” the official said.
Rosado said drug interdiction agencies such as the Armed Forces, DNCD, National Police, prosecutors and other intelligence agencies of Europe and the U.S. will be involved in the aircraft’s operating.
"It's basically an effort to support Dominican Republic now in the strategy drafted in the National Drug Plan which ends this year, intended to close the air, sea and land space," he said, adding that the satellite-controlled craft will carry no weapons.
UPDATE
According to eldia.com.do, during its testing the Predator has been used in operations which led to the capture of 1,722 packages of cocaine at sea, in joint operations of the DHCD and the U.S. DEA.

It will be something amazing if this drone can somehow tell the difference between a boat or ship that is not carrying drugs and those that are ..Similarly how can a drone detect drugs aboard the dozens of small planes that enter the Dominican air space . There are hundreds of pleasure motorised yachts around the island and the drone can somehow pick up the few with drugs , I think it may have some chance of picking up waiting vehicles at night in the sugar fields where the planes land but not in airspace or on water.

There is more intelligence than just the drones as they are but a tool in a comprehensive web of information gathering logistics.
When aircraft and ocean vessels seem out of place, off route norms, and/or carry marks not recognizable or obviously changed, they warrant closer scrutiny. ie: A fishing boat low in the water that is departing port.
Eye in the sky satelites can read the 3" lettering on the side of a duffle bag. A drone having closer proximity to its subjects can read the logos on golf balls.
Yet, this whole hype about the drones is more of a PR campaign to put the light on criminal trafficking, to make the island a hot zone of surveillance to inhibit the illegal activity, an obvious warning to the criminal element to stay away.

All that is fine, but looking at the bigger picture, the mission goal of today is supposed to be surveillance for drug interdiction efforts, but what guarantees the citizens have, that this same drones, will not be used at a later date, for other purposes, that may be restrictive of the citizens rights of privacy, and constitutional guarantees?

Here is a clue. Drug planes tend to not file flight planes and land at custom control airports. Ships tend to approach the coastline but not enter ports.

anthonyC ..you obviously do not visit DR often ..because there have been numerous reports of drugs seized at ports , both large and small and the majority of planes above DR are light planes that still are in contact with the air controllers at various times ..which simply means that you are wrong

Doesn't one think the US has established firm guidelines with the DR as how the drone(s) are to be used. The observations the DR technicians are receiving from a drone are being received by their US overseers = checks and balances.

anthonyC ..i obviously have no clue as to the way you think ..I admit that .you have told us here that the drone can differentiate between regular planes that land at custom controlled airports and those that do not between ships that dock at ports and those that do not ,,But every week here we know that drugs are coming through the ports and through the airports as well as coming from planes and ships coming in a secretive fashion ,,so really it is going to be difficult for the drone to track a drug plane or ship with any degree of certaibty , I would suggest your posting was erroneus , However we know the drones could be used to focus on robbers along las Americas from the airport .

If you are concerned about your privacy in public, then you should worry about the surveillance cameras planned for our streets. Not sure if it's just for Santo Domingo or all our mayor cities.
