Dominican researcher in team poised to cure glaucoma

Santo Domingo.- A Dominican scientist with other colleagues from the US and France develop an ocular implant to cure glaucoma, which was already approved by the European Economic Community.

The first phase of the clinical trial implant MicroShunt Innfocus was submitted by the team of scientists to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) .

Using the device Juan Francisco Batlle Pichardo, of the Laser Center in Santo Domingo; Paul Palmberg and Richard Parrish, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, and Isabel Riss, Glaucoma Center of Bordeaux, France, managed to control the intraocular pressure in 75 glaucoma cases.

Of the patients who took part in the research 23 were operated and supervised during three years in Santo Domingo by the surgical team Laser Center, headed by by Batlle Pichardo, who documented in a publication of the Bascom Palmer that only one case needed drops to control intraocular pressure.
