Santo Domingo.– Renowned Dominican singer and songwriter Xiomara Fortuna will perform an intimate concert, A Hug for Life, at Casa de Teatro 29 October at 9 pm.
Her multiple stylistic personalities have a mission: to rescue and
update a variety of forgotten rhythms and neglected styles from the Dominican Republic
such as saranduga banileja, carabine, petro, congo de Villa Mella, which had been
virtually exterminated by the popularity of merengue and bachata.
Surrounded by some of Santo Domingo's top musicians and arrangers, the native
of Monte Cristi displays her ever-flexible contralto through an entirely
original repertoire, mixing the above mentioned native forms with nurturing
non-Dominican influences drawn from jazz, rock, blues, reggae, soukous and
trova.
Critics have properly said that the aesthetic development of Dominican music will be inexorably linked to the artistic good fortune of Xiomara Fortuna.

Over 20 years ago I was so fortunate to be the roomate and friend of singer Xiomara Fortuna while working in the Dominican Republic for one year after college. Sadly, we lost touch. This winter I will be visiting the Dominican Republic with my family and very much want to reconnect with Xiomara. If anyone can forward her email, address or telephone number to me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you! Muchas Gracias!
