New York.– "First Love," the debut album of young singer Karina Pasian, a New Yorker of Dominican descent, has been granted six Grammy award prenominations, an unprecedented achievement in Dominican music history.
Karina earned the prenominations for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Singer, Song of the Year, Best New Female Artist of the Year and Best Musical Production.
The New York-born 17-year old, who has become the first person of Dominican descent to have received six Grammy nominations, is not just a singer; she’s a song writer, pianist and can fluently speak Spanish, Italian and Russian and can sing in seven languages.
Karina’s performances have caused some of the greatest in the music industry to become spellbound: Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand, Jay-Z, Diddy and the list goes on and on.
"I adore Quincy, he is my Godfather and it's just incredible for him to say I´m talented. He has worked with everyone you can think of, including Michael Jackson when he was young. I have no words to describe it," Karina said in a recent interview.

I here I thought that the Latin Grammys couldn't be less relevant when it came to recognizing talent they have again lowered the bar.
She doesn't even write her own songs and the only reason she has a recording contract is because her Godfather is Quincy Jones,
There are so much talent out there. In the Dominican republic and other places and they keep on comming up with Christina Aguilera wannbees.

What si so special about her?
Decent voice. But I can go to any High School and find Dozens of girls with decent voices.
All she has is that she was lucky to have Quincy Jones as her Padrino.

Too bad you feel the need to applaud somebody for their dubious heritage(She is only 1/2 Dominican) rather than their work and talent.
Tell me. If the Back Street Boys were Dominican would you say they were the next Beatles?

Never heard of her. I listen to the radio everyday here in California, but I've never heard of her. The only Dominican that I hear a lot is Kat Deluna "Wine Up".

Is very interesting to see what non-Dominican do to harm our accomplishment, as soon as I heard Karina i knew she was a star and now that I know she is Dominican the better.

Seriously, people need to let go of all that riduculousness. Karina has talked about being dominicana on many accounts. She embraces her heritage in this aspect and she is a proud resident of Washington Heights. She keeps it real and has no problem w/that.

Well I guess art is left to interpretation. Though I don't consider her to be something demanding extreme accolades or notoriety, I do agree with "supporting your own". And on the same token neither is Gloria Estefan or Willy Chirino Or Jon Secada something to rave about. If she was Cuban I'm sure she would have been all over Hispanic networks in Miami etc and opinions would have been different.
But she's not.

I must admit I never really heard of Karina until I read this article. I down loaded some of her music and I must say her voice is beautiful. I really loved it. I also saw a video with her father Rafael Pasian and brother. They both seem to be very Dominican to me. But then again what is a Dominican suppose to look like. Her father, from my interpretation, appears to be a a first generation Dominican-American from Washington Heights. Now I don't know from what source they quote but wikipedia states she is half Armenian. Nevertheless, Karina, if she is part Armenian, does not acknowledge that side of her heritage. So I assume that it must be her mother who is the non-Dominican. But then again, from her features, I doubt it. Armenians tend to be or have a mediterranean caucasian/middle eastern like features. Whereas Karina is more of an urban New York City, Dominican-American "criolla" looking girl. So somebody please clarify the confusion.

I saw this kind of discussion comming and it so so happened that i discovered this website serendipity. I still wonder why the hate? why some people can see the sucess of others?, I mean if you dind't make it , why others can't ? Talent is talent wherever you go and guess what, the girl has plenty of it. Wether she is half or half of half Dominican she still have Dominican blood ih her and thats that. It is irrelevant that Quincy Jones is her godfather the girl is who she is because she has talent. like it or not. Yes i am sure that there is alot of girls her age that can sing , good for them but once again my friend ,that is not the point. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

mary555-Can you please clarify, what do you mean by: "I still wonder why the hate?"
I read all of the posts above and I just dont see what you are talking about. If you are a Dominican and familiar with our culture, you should know better then to say that. You should have been able to grasp the exact jest of the comments, otherwise someone outside of our nationality can easily misinterpret it as "hate" but in this case it does not apply. Dominicans do not talk about ancestry, race or nationality within the context of which you have implied. When we make mention, it is usually is to express acceptance. Contrary to most other places, we as people are the most receptive to other cultures and to non-Dominican influences to the point that we embrace them unsparingly. Now after what I have said-"DO YOU UNDERSTAND?" If Karina Pasian has Armenian ancestry, that to us is a good thing, just another new added spice to give more flavor to our multi-cultural Dominican sazón.
