Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Juan Deláncer will direct the film Trópico de Sangre in which the actress Michelle Rodriguez will play the role of Minerva Mirabal, the oldest of three sisters murdered on orders by the dictator Rafael Trujillo, said newspaper El Dia today.

Doña Dedé Mirabal, sister of the martyrs of the province named in their honor, will have a special participation.

Also playing leading roles together with Rodriguez will be the Dominican actresses Claudette Lalí and Celinés Toribio, who live in Los Angeles.

According to El Dia, Rodriguez will co-produce the film, slated to begin shooting in November. Dominican Today reported on the project earlier this month, but pulled the article after the actress’ Web site discontinued it.

Let's hope that this film is better than Salma Hayek's "In The Time of the Butterflies"...what a piece of garbage that was..Let's also hope that at least a significant portion of the film is actually filmed in DR...veracruz, mexico did not convince me as a surrogate for dr as was the case with Hayek's movie.

Michelle Rodriguez has NEVER had a "record of drug abuse". She had 2 drinking-related DUIs in a 3 year span over 2 years ago. It's old news. They were youthful indescretions of a girl from the ghetto thrown into money and fame. She's human. Since then she's grown up, cleaned up her act and is making big films now (Avatar, Fast&Furious 4, Battle in Seattle).

Before (falsely) repeating whatever the biased media tosses at you, you should look into some in-depth interviews and see the kind of person she is. She strikes me as a great person, and she is now making an important film. I read on her website the whole thing WILL be filmed in the Dominican Republic, so people can rest easy on that front.

I read "In the Time of Butterflies" and saw the film. It was very flashy, fictionalized, and did not feel real. I'm confident that Ms. Rodriguez has the heart and intelligence to make this film right. And with the real Dedé Mirabal overseeing the process, you know it will also be accurate.

I hope that the movie producer reads moya-ponds before putting this film together. In all my readings I have never been impressed with the Mirabales, specially the husbans and father of the the ladies. The family only turned against Trujillo after they lost his favor. Minerva was very upset about the fact that she did not get entrance into law school, which at that time required direct government authorization. After this incident and her public act of disagreement prompting the dicatator to make a proposition, which Minerva, initially did not reject or accepted, but kept him in the game to simply emabarass him in the end. Then everything went downhill from there. Now, if she would been accepted into law school, her's heroism and fight against the dictator would have never happened, she would simply become part of a system which she and her family were desperetly trying to be part of. However, I do recognize her courage to stand up to that criminal, but it was not for the people
