Los Angeles.– Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84.

The actor died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia at his side, family spokesman Bill Powers said.

Powers declined to comment on the cause of death or provide further details.

"Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played," Heston's family said in a statement. "No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country."

Heston revealed in 2002 that he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease, saying, "I must reconcile courage and surrender in equal measure."

With his large, muscular build, well-boned face and sonorous voice, Heston proved the ideal star during the period when Hollywood was filling movie screens with panoramas depicting the religious and historical past. "I have a face that belongs in another century," he often remarked.

Publicist Michael Levine, who represented Heston for about 20 years, said the actor's passing represented the end of an iconic era for cinema.

"If Hollywood had a Mt. Rushmore, Heston's face would be on it," Levine said. "He was a heroic figure that I don't think exists to the same degree in Hollywood today."

The actor assumed the role of leader offscreen as well. He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild and chairman of the American Film Institute and marched in the civil rights movement of the 1950s. With age, he grew more conservative and campaigned for conservative candidates.

In June 1998, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association, for which he had posed for ads holding a rifle. He delivered a jab at then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

Heston stepped down as NRA president in April 2003, telling members his five years in office were "quite a ride. ... I loved every minute of it."

Later that year, Heston was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. "The largeness of character that comes across the screen has also been seen throughout his life," President Bush said at the time.

The role of Moses is the only one anybody remembers him for, if anybody remembers. Charlly finally understood that Moses was nothing but a low down and dirty traitor of the African people who raised and educated him, especially in the fields of philosophy and ethics. So, Charlly ... after his early support for civil rights not base on race ... in his latter years, became a fervent advocate of the universal availability of the means of genocide, a trait which he shared with Hitler and Himmler.

Good riddance and please burn slowly.

He was a great guy and we must show some respect. Belial, Moses didn't even exist. The bible is the most inaccurate history book ever written! It's mostly fiction.

Thats a good point, it was reading it that made me an Atheist too.

There are some pretty sick people on this site, armchair revolutionaries, people who feel the childish need to express themselves at every given opportunity.
A mans died, show some respect and decorum.

Truth in art, including some movies, is often more metaphorical than historical. The difficulty is that some people believe that the historical side monopolizes truth, leaving the metaphorical bereft of content and utterly empty.

Mo deals rather knowingly with divine beings, their historical and metaphorical truth, if any.

What is a divine being? This is the supreme question.

Mo says it is:

(1) immaterial, non-physical, or purely spiritual entity ... [that which was before creation]

(2) immortal and undying ......[this is celebrated Tree of Life]

(3) capable of doing miracles, that is, it can will a violation of a law of nature or is above law

(4) knows good and evil ........[this is celebrated Tree of Knowledge]

Is there an object that corresponds to the four essential characteristics that constitute the concept of a divine being?

Mo doesn't seem to correspond to concept of a divine being because Mo had a smelly and rotting body, thus showing that Mo wasn't pure spirit. Even worst, Mo's smelly and rotting body died on him, showing that Mo was far from being immortal. It therefore seems that only thing Mo had going for him was the ability to do miracles ... or circus performances ... and erudition about things good and evil.

God is one of many divine beings, as they are defined above, but God is or was the strongest and smartest of all the divine beings. God unusual strenght and intelligence sets it apart from other divine beings. But apart from this extra strenght and intelligence, God is only an entity that persist in spirituality, last immortally, plays around with miracles, and knows moral law.

Mo claims a special relationship between him and God. Mo even says God liked Mo.

Since Mo was a traitor to the people who fished him out of the river, raised, and educated him, it's likely that God didn't trust Mo, because God saw that Mo was two-faced. Thus, I doubt if God liked Mo either metaphorically or historically. Mo talks about his special relationship with God to make Mo look big.

Charlie knew how to put on airs, as if he was really Mo. Some people who say the movie believed Charlie was Mo ... because very much like Mo, Charlie was also two-faced.

Blanco,

I do not want to argue with you,

You don't like guns, that's fine with me.
You believe that guns, not criminals are the problem, that's fine too.

but don't be so quick to ask for restrictions to other people rights... even those that look futile to you

if you look carefully, you will see the slow but steady raising of dictatorship in simple things like the loss of the right to own firearms ...
his climax being the abolition of that freedom of speech that you enjoy so much

"you have gun laws that work..."
Yes... and our healtcare system is the best...
You are watching too much of that Michael Moore stuff Blanco... don't believe all what you hear about Wonderland (Canada), this is far from truth...

According to Dante, who speaks from personal knowledge, there are nine levels below.

The top two or three levels are reserved for the best who never found the Nazarene.

Where does Charlie belong? The lowest level is nine where Lucifer spends most of his time.

Charlie's record is replete with civil rights, the widest availability of the means of killing [which Charlies saw as a civil right], and going Hollywood, that is, the glorification of killing.

If it were only a matter of civil rights and going Hollywood, Charlies shouldn't have been sent downstairs.

But he's there, along with the other gun nuts, trying to kill those who are already dead.

Above re-born, below re-die.

But on what level does Charlie reside below?

The Eight.

For Evil Counselors.

Just because he was pro gun didn't make him a conservative. If he were a conservative he wouldn't have cared about civil rights and the poor. Conservatives only care about the rich and white people. I think he was a constitutionalist.

So, Belial, the one created just after Lucifer, he will be just one level above you... for eternity ... Poor soul

how this comment section went to moses from heston is a mystrey. my comments on the NRA are based on fact. yes criminals or users of the guns are the problem, my point was that everytime a municipalaity steps up an enforcement ordinance the NRA is there to challenge. Not to codemn the crimianl but to protect his right to have it.
michael moore is a comedian and I put him in the same class as Oliver Stone, masters of the conspiracy theory
