Santo Domingo.– Dominican jazz player Sly De Moya will open tonight for Paquito D'Rivera and "Funk Tango" along with Berklee Teachers Mark Wallker and Oscar Stagnaro, at Teatro La Fiesta of the Hotel Jaragua.

De Moya, who has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gira, Michael Camilo and Oscar Stagnaro, studied at Berklee College of Music, where he had John Mayer as classmate.

He was later involved in some projects by Wea Latina: Alejandro Sanz Unplugged, La Ley Unplugged, Maná Unplugged and Luis Miguel´s Mis Romances.

Paquito D'Rivera grew up as a prodigy in Cuba, playing both saxophone and clarinet and performing with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra at a young age. When he was seven, became the youngest artist ever to endorse a musical instrument, when he signed on with the legendary company Selmer.

By 1980, D'Rivera was dissatisfied about the constraints placed on his music in Cuba for many years, and had always longed to live in the United States.

The only restraint placed on D'Rivera's music in Cuba was it was too hard for D'Rivera to make a million dollars off of his music in Cuba.

D'Rivera's music ... the little that there is ... is a gift to him from Cuba, for which he has shown ingratitude.

D'Rivera who is widely acclaimed, to be sure, has a gift, but it's only a modest one. He reads very well.

His acclaim arises almost entirely from his political and ideological prostitution.

Sandoval is a political and ideological deviate like D'Rivera. But Sandoval has genius to support independently his claim to great artistic honor.

D'Rivera substitutes, at every opportunity, his repulsive prostitution for the genius he lacks and arrogantly commands the audience to aplplaud the noise he makes and the streetwalking he does.

Musically, D'Rivera doesn't belong on the same stage with Chucko, Gonzalo, Sandoval, and about two dozen other Cuban or Cuban American jazz artists.

D'Rivera is a jazz phony.

"Paquito D'Rivera grew up as a prodigy in Cuba, playing both saxophone and clarinet and performing with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra at a young age. When he was seven, became the youngest artist ever to endorse a musical instrument, when he signed on with the legendary company Selmer," DT "glorifies" Paquito D'Rivera in its piece on Dominican jazz player Sly De Moya.

0000

"Prodigy?"

That's worthless. It only means the student learns quickly at an early age what others create and leave behind them. What has D'Rivera created and will leave? A lot of junk. Otherwise, the DT wouldn't go back 50 years to find something with which "glorify" D'Rivera.

"Both saxophone and clarinet ?"

Big deal.

"Endorse a musical instrument?"

The canine actors, Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, also endorsed products. And don't forget the celebrated Taco Bell dog.

Poor Paquito a child prodigy with a great future until the communists came to power when he was 12 years old ....they then forced him to play Russian marching music to try to break his spirit but it did not work ....he saved and saved and escaped the commies so he did not have to play russian marching music and listen to any of Fidels long and boring speeches any more

i have no alternative but to agree with Belial's assessment of Paquito as a musician. i am not going to get into political dogfights regarding everybody who appears in these threads. as an artist, Paquito, measured against other exponents of his instrument, is a mediocrity. it would be sacrilege to compare him to masters such as Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Bird, Getz, even Paul Desmond. he belongs in that lower tier of commercial musicians like Kenny G, playing commercially acceptable, repetitive squeaks and squawks.

You realize that a master level in jazz is mediocre in most other forms of music.

what the hell are you talking about? other forms such as what? i am dying to hear this! please elaborate anthonyc, but think carefully before you make a fool of yourself. and please, do not give me some Eurocentric, caucasian value standard of what is good music and what is not. in other words, please stay from silliness like "opera is superior to salsa" give us objective reasoning, if that can be applied to music appreciation

In 2005, D'Rivera wrote a letter criticizing musician Carlos Santana for his decision to wear a t-shirt with the image of Che Guevara on it to the 2005 Academy Awards, citing Guevara's role in the execution of counter-revolutionaries in Cuba, including his own cousin................This is the real reason belial and his running dogs dont like Paquito the freedom fighter

"Belial does not like him because he can't play worth a crap!"

0000

Paquito's deviant politics and aberrant ideology are Paquito's business. After all, Paquito belongs with the freaks and the riff-raff where he has very properly positioned himself.

But , with respect to a matter of importance, Paquito's pretensions as a jazz musician is our business.

As an example of its good taste, the revolutionary proletariat not only shuns but also recoils in revulsion from philistine vulgarities like Paquito.

Carlos Santana, on the other hand, shows strength of character in a profession somewhat known for its weaknesses in this sphere, and he is an outstanding musician in his genre, displaying a rare combination of taste and genius.

"You realize that a master level in jazz is mediocre in most other forms of music," anthonyC rushes out of the cave in which he resides and does the lunatic.

oooo

"Most other forms of music" is rather vague and sweeping.

Since a mediocrity like Paquito first won international distinction as a classical musician before he assumed his ridiculous pretensions as a jazz musician, anthonyC doesn't or can't include classical music in his mysterious category of "most other forms of music."

So, clearly, anthonyC's "most other forms of music" encompass but does not extend beyond various butt-shaking sounds and genres even though if one is a good booty-shaker, one can butt-shake ... quite well ... to jazz, too.

A court in Havana, Cuba, has ordered a punk rock musician to pay a fine of $30 (£15) for public disorder for playing his band's music too loud.

However, Gorki Aguila was cleared of a more serious charge that could have led to a jail sentence.

The lead singer of band Porno Para Ricardo is known for songs that ridicule Cuba's communist government.

He had faced a possible four year term in prison for the crime known in Cuba as social dangerousness. .........ONLY 4 YEARS for ridicule wow Raul is really lightening up it used to be the firing squad
