Santo Domingo.– Dominican photographer Anabelle Perez opened this week her individual exhibition "Alto Manhattan - La Patria Chica", in which she shows a piece of her country in Washington Hights, New York, where a solid Dominican community lives and keeps its traditions.

The artist´s first individual exhibit, as part of PHOTOIMAGEN 2008 –the most important photographic festival in the Dominican Republic– took place at Encuentro Artesanal Gallery, in the Colonial Zone.

I have been astonished about how little Dominicans know about their own history, some don’t even care. I am in Washington Hts every month. Now I don’t everything but I know some what. And I did not grow up in DR, many young Dominicans don’t know too much about their own history. Many of those that call them selves Trinitarios after the Padres de la Patria Duerte, Sanchez, Mella… many of then know little about Dominican History,
But they can walk around and yell Patria all day… but enough about them, I know of grown adults that still think that the war of 65 was over communism. And that Caamaño was bad and another Fidel…

“155 and Broadway go eat some Caporal Chicken…” Casa De Mofungo” I love that food!

I understand your sentiments. but dude you sound like a hick. Don't judge every low life thug on the corner as a true dominican! that is needless to say ignorant on your part. Being dominican and being proud of your heritage does not constitute knowing just your history and eating fast crappy food from the neighborhood which by the way has better food than caporal (greasy rubbery chicken fried on lard) and the mofongo house (crappy awful mangu with some kind of poultry) dude if this is your measure of true dominican, you will have clog arteries and a heart condition w historical facts.
The true dominican is proud of his/her heritage knows its history and leads by example.

part 2. That means that we dont forget who we are because we know where we came from, so we strive for better. I hope her exhibit shows more than the typical unemployed time waster on the street.

Trust me, the true dominican in the heights is more a secret, you find them interacting with people who know their history, live in integrity and work hard. They are not hanging out on the streets or in front of their building. These people are doing things period!

What is a Dominican? do you need to know history? eat chicarones? know what perrico ripio is? No! There is no set of criteria that defines what a dominican is or should be. The DR is a heteredox, multicultural society. The believes and practices of some, may not be the same as others, so who is more Dominican? We can't push a single identity. That is an oppressive measure that excludes those who do not fit that identity which is usually defined by those in power! Can't you see that those in power may manipulate what is Dominican to push their agenda? How do they do this? via the media!!! How many non-white people are part of our advertisement? Just look through the Dominican Style magazine, and you would think all Dominicans are as white as the Finns. The reality is far more complex than the simplistic views of people like GC and Ruby who are single-thought individuals. The world is more nuanced than simple-thought messages. More knowledge about DR history is good.

the point is, GC, stop being such an ass - a donkey that is. you're not even dominican and yet you pretend to be the flag-bearer for "white-supremacy" in the DR. Well, my canadian friend, you and bigots like you won't have the run of this blog without being called out for what you are - a reactionary bigot, who distorts history, makes pointless remarks aimed at insulting people, and bully people interested in having open discussion of the issues. So, maldito canadiense de la porra, my point is, enough of of your hatred speech; enough of your filth; and enough of your bullying ways.

Try to put yourself in the position of those you insult. Go volunteer and work to improve the conditions of those who live in misery. Go talk to people and see if it's their own choice they live the way they do. Go ask if non-whites have exprienced discrimination and racism. Go and then come back and report back. Hopefully by talking with those you insult, you'll learn to be more sentative.

What gives you the impression that I'm a leftie? I'd like to know. The fact that I'm for human rights, fighting oppressors. At least I'm not un maldito canadiense, who hates everyone and everything. Go back to your frozen paradise and leave us to the bliss of a world w/o you.

Oh GC, you're such a simpleton that you make this banter enjoyable. Do you even know the difference between communism and socialism? do you even know what capitalism is? I hate putting people in their places, I usually enjoy engaging them in discussion, but bullies like you need to be put in their places, and your hatred speech needs to be called out for their bigotted ways.

hey, that's really good comback... urrrrr. How you like getting pushed around? ah? Like it? well, to show you I'm not humorless, even though I don't care what YOU think, here's a (bad) joke:

Giridhar Shah, a south african of indian pursuation, was travelling from Johannesburg to Durban. But alas, he took off a bit late and stopped at a hotel for the night. He goes up to the receptionist and has the following dialogue:

Receptionist - "Good evening sir, how are you?"
Giridhar - "Good evening, I'd like a room for the night."

Receptionist - "Do you have a reservation?"
Giridhar - "No, I'm not that type of Indian"

get it? ;-)

GC, what would it take for you to realize you are the biggest jerk on this blog? shall we take a poll? But let me tell you, there's a nice place in hell for xenophobic people like you who spread hatred and lies. My stupid canadian, just because you say things are a way, doesn't make it so. People distort reality to justify their interests, even if they're wrong. That's why it's so important to engage others in discussion so that we can see where our perceptions are wrong. But you, you pathetic ideologue, refuse to engage in dialogue b/c you fear, YES YOU ARE AFRAID, that reality doesn't comform to your distorted views, and that if you even stop to think about how things really are and how they should be, you'd jump off the highest roof b/c you embody everything oppressive in life. Pathetic, you are simply pathetic, and not worth any more time. If I don't reply it's not that You've made a point, but rather that you're not worth one more second of consideration.

Alto Manhattan - La Patria Chica"
I though this was about the exhibition. lol But I saw an interesting discussion so I stopped by. Regarding La Patria Chica. Good for that lady and good luck on her work. Regarding Dominican identity, I think we are a very diversified nation. I live in Chicago and I am somehow glad that down here there are not too many dominicans mostly because when there are too many of any community, it tends to become noisy. Lets name NY, Boston, etc. But definitely there are general characteristics and things that we will almost always see in a dominican. Those patterns are very well incrusted in our culture and folklore. I am from San Juan de la Maguana and the Sanjuanero could be dying and he would show you a smile regardless. Every little town has its own. History has played a great role in what we are today. I also agree with the person that said that the media has a great influence in making it seem one way or the other.

Alto Manhattan - La Patria Chica"
Part two.
When somebody becomes rich even if that person was black start acting like a white person and instead of fighting for equality. We don't . We rather stay mute. I have learned so much from the American experience that I know and understand now the treatment some people get in Dominican Republic just because of their color. Eso da penas a veces. So hopefully the Dream of having a culture in which every is equal and nobody abuses nobody just because I am "lighter than you"!

well said moses. Recognizing appreciating our differences is terribly important on the way to a fairer society. We need more communication between our brothers and sisters abroad and those here in DR. By sharing your cultural, social, and political views with people here, it can help people recognize that a better reality is possible. That all is not about political clientelism or forgetting about your neighbor after "you make it."

As for the racial, gender, and other forms of discrimination, the diaspora here too can play a significant role by again communicating a culture of tolerance and acceptance. Also by investing in alternative forms of communications, b/c the issue here is that the oligarchs control the media and portray their values as the "ideal-type." I don't konw exactly how we can accomplish this, but we need a more bottom-up approach to our media & advertisement that reflects the multicultural nature of the DR. Any suggestions?
