Santo Domingo.- Tomorrow, Monday January 5th, Dominican families celebrate "El día de los tres reyes magos" or Three Kings Day - the feast of the Epiphany. The traditional date for this celebration is January 6th but it has been moved to the previous day, Monday, to create a long weekend.

This is the day when most Dominican children receive their Christmas gifts and toy stores around the country have been full of shoppers in the run up to the special celebration.

Other traditions associated with Reyes include leaving hay and cigars for the visiting Kings and their camels and processions like the one organized by the Fire Brigade through the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.

As a child, when I lived in the Santo Domingo, what I remember about this day is NOT the gifts, it was the festive air of the day, how my family gathered together, and how for one day I forgot I was poor...it didnt matter that I did not have many toys that day... I was blessed and rich in my familys love. I now live in California, and i still celbrate el dia de los Magos with my 3 children and their ( non Domincan) father ...but not with toys, my children hear stories and we have a feast of all the traditional Dominican foods I grew up eating. and yea...we leave a few cigars out....
