Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government on Thursday bestowed the Heraldic Order Cristóbal Columbus on the legendary Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, in recognition of his successful film career .
President Leonel Fernandez, the First lady Margarita Cedeño, Government officials, business leaders, diplomats and film directors attended the a ceremony to recognize the actor, held in the National Palace.
Fernandez said Sharif is a cinema icon who’s even influenced his own family, and noted that he has seen the film Doctor Zhivago at least 15 times, in reference to one of the two blockbusters –the other ‘Lawrence of Arabia’- which catapulted the actor to world fame.
