SANTO DOMINGO. – Sales of Villa Mella’s famous pork crisps (chicharrón) plunged 50 percent in the last few weeks after the threat from the A H1N1 virus, several vendors said.

Although pork doesn’t transmit the AH1N1, customers have refrained from eating chicharron from fear of contracting the virus which has already claimed 26 lives in Mexico and one in the United States.

Many eateries previously full of customers who consider pork crisps, entrails and sausages a delicacy, now seem deserted, as several have even had to close after the threat of the pandemic.

Nicolasa de Jesus Marte who has a business in a small plaza in the avenue Mirabal Sisters, said she’s been a chicharron vendor since she was young, and has never seen her business suffer from the lack of customers. “It is totally falling. I used to finish selling before 5 p.m. and now I must wait until 10 p.m. to be able to sell something.”

She complained that fewer sales also force the slaughter houses to limit production. “We no longer find neither tripe or anything in the market because those people (pig farmers) are scared of even slaughtering those pigs to sell them.”

xwill,

I live 365 miles from NYC! No chicharron around here but, man, how I would like to have some! Next time I go to NYC I'll just have to find some Dominican joint offering the delicacy.

Anybody knows of any place in Corona, Queens, that may offer this delicacy?

I am all ears!

FYI: I believe they are called pork "rinds"! Not, crisps!

Anyhow, I don't indulge in the other 'white meat'. Why do you think they call it pig? Ever heard of tapeworm? or, trichinosis?

You don't need to wait for CDC to call it H1N1 for you to know that the pig isn't meant to be eaten....Have you ever seen what they eat? Porqueria! Where they live? Posilga!

Che, Fo! No need to eat this animal, hermanos!

glomar,
that is a drive... my friend rigged up a motor and made a place in his back yard where he cooks the pig. The motor flips it over the fire all day. Crazy Dominicans!

xwill,

Ever heard of Orion Cooker? Look it up online.......everything is the best....best ribs and in shortest time. Cooked six racks of ribs in 75 minutes, and they were better than any I've ever tried at BBQ houses, including the famous Dinosaur.

Old-School:

Actually, I'm a vegan! No, I don't eat any animals....I love animals; Why would I eat them?
I don't care who eats what...As Jesus said: What matters is what comes out of Men; Not what goes in them! But, I would advise any wise compatriota to stay away from the SWINE...In Higuey as a child, I saw what they feed these animals, and frankly it's garbage..Why would anyone then try to eat them? "Death wish", maybe, like Charles Bronson?

But, Muslims, and Jews are right....It's not Kosher or Halal.....Clean in English.....Pa bon en Kreyol!
